man with individuality/god complex goes on a boyfest road trip and does “cool” stuff and drugs and thinks we all want to read about it.

This book, I think, will change depending on your mindset at the time you read it and most especially your age. I'd like to read it again to see how my older self would enjoy it. I did like it but with so much hype maybe I expected too much?

On lending me this book its owner warned that it was sort of dull and frivolous and just about a bunch of guys going around getting drunk and looking for women. That is essentially what it is about, but I didn't think it was totally without merit.

In going back and forth across 1950s America, the narrator (Sal) and his crazy muse (Dean) encounter a plethora of characters and cultures at 110 miles an hour. I liked the fast, excited writing style, the funny little stories about various fellow travellers, the mad lust for life and conman antics possessed by Dean, and of course the scenery.

Obviously, this book must be read with the knowledge that the characters are terrible people (racism, misogyny etc part to do with the era and part to do with the characters' utter disregard for anyone outside of their weird circle) and that this is not a definitive snapshot of 1950s America as some claim it to be. It's certainly a mistake for people to read it and think the bunch of drunks the story follows are somehow heroic and profound and lead a model existence which all artists should emulate.

There's a moment in the story I found unintentionally funny - when the narrator realises that all the women left behind by the men are in contact with each other. In other words, that the women too have lives of their own and personhood. I think it would be fun to read a book imagining the lives of these women -- maybe someone has written this already?

Great book full of nomadic charm. Kerouac does an amazing job of describing the characters' zeal for life. This book made me happy which is more than I can say for many others. Ripe with references to Zen Buddhism, this book will transport you to the summit of Matterhorn or into a hopped traincar on the way west.

took me a while to finish coz of life but i loved how long it took me, because the book really provided me with a source of escapism, so it was really nice to spend so much time with it

This was a difficult one to get through. I didn't despise it or enjoy it.
