I found the Count delightful. So charming. He really had a way with little girls—not creepy—in a favorite uncle sort of way. The literary references made me want to go read all those books again—and add the ones I haven’t yet read—and then reread this one so I could experience what he saw. And I definitely need to watch Casablanca again.
But I think my favorite moment was when Anna asked him what got his goat and he replied, “My goat is not gotten!” Luckily I was sitting in my parked car when this happened bc I was definitely laughing too hard to see the road had I been driving.
Oh and the Triumvirate! And the key! And the service stairs! And the study! And Zoot! (Forgive me if this is not spelled correctly—audio does that.) Just so many details to tickle the imagination.
Even the chapter titles—go look at them if, like me, you normally don’t pay attention.

For what matters in life is not whether we receive we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim.

This is a gorgeous story of a man who lives the social changes of 20th century Russia suspended in time because he has been condemned in 1922 to house arrest in a Moscow hotel.

This book makes you imagine a more civilized and purposeful way of living in which the goal is not to maximize productivity or income but to enjoy life.
Of course this ideal way of living is possible for our Gentleman given his upbringing and it's precisely that inequality that led to many revolutions around the world. Although the story does not delve into that topic, you can see how through the years he becomes more and more aware of his privilege.

Without losing his hope, love and always looking for beauty in every aspect of life, he manages to change everyone around him as well.
