I guess I neglected to write a review for this and it's been a while since I read it, but I loved this book. The writing and prose are superb and the characters are pretty great too. I want to watch the movie and see if it lives up to the book.

Not really sure how to comment on this book. It definitely held my interest.....maybe to see it through to a brighter future.

The writing at the line level= 5 stars

Melodramatic plot that puts the protagonist through an almost laughable amount of drama= 2 stars

Rushed, pointless ending: 1 star

Things go off the rails around the second foster home. Fitch should have narrowed the focus and scope... it would have been far more interesting to focus on one of the families to slow down and do a deep characterization. Everything that happens after the second foster home is absolutely ridiculous.

I want so much to hate this book. But it’s one of the few books in my life that just sticks with you after you read it. I don’t know how I came to read this, maybe a librarian recommended it? Maybe I just randomly picked it up. But I remember reading it in high school and thinking that these woman are such forces to be reckoned with.
I’m in my thirties now and I have such a different outlook on this book. Maybe because I’m a mom, but I have such a different curvature of thinking now that I’ve read it again. It’s still most definitely one of my favorite books. Astrid is so strong in her own way but yet it’s never clear to even her at the end that she survived. Maybe that’s how it is, maybe those with damaged mothers know you can never escape. I always hope the author would write a sequel but then it doesn’t need a sequel because we know that Astrid will be ok. Such a great book. Highly recommend.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for years after loving the movie. The movie really spoke to me. I think it was my love for the movie that ultimately propelled me through this novel. A lot of flowery language and descriptions isn’t normally my thing but I had the movie playing in my head the whole time so that helped.
It’s honestly is a beautiful story about a young girl turning into a woman. The complex relationship with her mother is what really draws me in. In the movie, she seems to cut ties with her mother entirely toward the end. However, I appreciate that it didn’t exactly take that turn in the book. I appreciated the ending much more from the book. The details really make the difference.
This story is amazing and feels like a classic in my opinion.
