OKAYYYYY, this mystery is shaping up to be very interesting. I’m glad it’s not a one book mystery but it might span across several books. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
For a mystery novel, it was alright. I've read better though.

It was great for a mystery. Had all of the good stuff, like giant manor house, a decades old murder, and a young detective. Cannot wait to read next in the series.
I've been really interested in reading this book for a bit, but the beginning I found is a little slow which made me not super interested in spending time reading it. But once I got past the first 100 pages, it really picked up and went in a completely different direction than I expected. I did not expect the little romance we were able to get from the main character and someone else. It was very nice to get a little spice, but it did not take the spotlight from the mysteries of the book. However, I really enjoyed what the book presented and am looking forward to reading the second to see what happens next.

Got to give this a solid three star because I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this but I have absolutely zero memories of it.
A fascinating mystery story, and I love the delicate construction of the clues and riddles. But this is also very obviously, and frustratingly, one story told across three books.

4.5/5 stars
It's a 4.5 because I felt like I was missing some of the seriousness you would get from older characters. Stevie is 16, and though the mystery was dealing with murder and kidnapping, it didn't feel as seriousness as I thought it would.
However I really liked the pacing and the clues. Though slow at times, it felt realistic. I didn't know it would be stretched into 3 books, but that feels like a good choice. I remember thinking to myself "How is a 16 year old girl supposed to solve an 80 year old mystery". My favorite aspect of the book was getting to see what happened in 1936, and seeing how Maureen Johnson interwove events in the past with clues and knowledge that Stevie had in the present.
I wish a pandemic wasn't going on so that I could go to Barnes and Noble to buy the second book.
