Interesting premise, with an intriguing main character. I knew it was a trilogy but wasn’t quite prepared for it to be such a cliffhanger ending. Main disappointment was the heel turn of our lead’s love interest seemingly out of nowhere. It didn’t make sense, especially with the way that he had inserted himself into Stevie’s life without being asked. The weird infighting of the friend group was also odd, given that the perceived slights were so inconsequential. That said, I’ll be looking for book 2, as I’m curious how the story continues!
ok so it kinda got ok towards the end, the writing style is horrible tho
i might read the second book icl, im a bit invested

This book was created in a lab for the mood I was in this weekend: Vermont. Boarding school for geniuses. Unsolved historical intrigue. Unique, thoughtful, weird heroine. Murder mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed this and raced through it in a little more than 24 hours.
I have two quibbles - one fair, one not.
My unfair quibble: I don't want *plot.* I just want to spend time at the genius school attending classes and meeting students and learning about their projects.
My fair quibble: It's a mystery novel and the mystery isn't solved by the end of the novel! Not since first reading the Hunger Games have I been so blindsided by the fact that a book didn't end or even resolve. Also, due to the fact that I was reading this on a library ebook, I thought I had thirty pages left and then they ended up all being endnotes. Horribly shocked!
Anyway, time to see if the library has book two.

This was one of the best books I read in 2018. It was basically everything I wanted from a YA mystery book, and after reading many other YA mystery books throughout the year, it was so nice to finally get what I was looking for. This book pulled me right in, and was full of twists and mysteries that actually worked with the story instead of just coming out of nowhere to force mystery vibes. I liked the double-mystery aspect with the flipping between the past and the present as well, and I was left guessing (and actually cared about who Truly Devious might be) through the entire story. The entire setting of this book was also super fascinating to me, and I just found myself wanting to know more and more about the school and the characters and everything going on. I could not get enough of this book, and I'm glad there are more books coming in this series so that I can continue to fall back into the world of the story.

I usually don’t read mysteries. I’m a fantasy main. But this one was fire. The climax was a bit weak but it’s a starter book so ehh. But every thing else was super well made. W story
NO. I don't want to wait for the third book to see who dun it.

I didn’t realize this was a YA book or that it was part of a trilogy until I checked it out at my local library. I enjoyed it but will have to read the two others to find out the answer to the murders.

I picked this book up after reading Maureen Johnson's tiny clever tiny book "Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village." This is equally clever, set in a private high school for genius juniors and seniors in northern Vermont. Stevie, the heroine, wants to solve the 1936 kidnapping and possible murders of the founder's wife and daughter along with the death of a student at the school. Her housemates are into writing, art, philosophy, drama, and making things. Like most genius teens, there is brilliance, angst, hormones, mistakes, blind spots, intensity . . . After making a video about a former tunnel on the property where the 1936 student's body was found, a current-day student has an accident with dry ice (which contains poisonous chemicals) or was it murder? Like many other young adult series, this book ends on a cliff hanger, so on to part two of three.
