A scintillating novel with a strong (and strangely relatable) main character. I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series.

definitely a little more out there than others. i think the ellingham concept is pretty cool— if i had that type of money i’d do it too— but i swear it felt like he was showing off after a sec. david seems really suspicious; the looks, the secrecy, the endings. i have high expectations

Hmmmmmmm. Literally the only thought in my head. Very cliffhangery

I almost did not finish because of the pretentious language (which was purposeful) but I am so glad I kept reading. I used this as part of my reading challenge for 2024 and was going to use it as a locked room mystery but decided instead for the abrupt ending as literally no answers were given. I will read the whole series and will recommend as well.

did a re-read so i can finally get caught up on the series. my thoughts from the first time i read it are largely the same as they are now. i still don't care much for the romance. in fact, i think David's kind of a dick and i really hope the other books redeem him somewhat if he's going to be a viable love interest for Stevie.

other than that, it was still a lot of fun and i can't wait to see the mysteries unravel.

Okay, so this book wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it... a lot.
Everywhere I thought the book was going to go, it didn't. I truly felt like I was figuring things out alongside Stevie. The only thing that WASN'T a surprise was the fact that David's dad was Edward King. As soon as Stevie identified the "daddy issues" (and the fact that Edward King came up so often), I knew that was the big secret he was hiding.

But that's not the point. That was a minor mystery compared to the rest of the book. Which, technically, didn't actually get solved. I'm still left with more questions than answers and that has me CRAVING the next book in the series desperately.

The one thing that prevented this book from being a 5-star read (because I loved everything else, especially Stevie as a character. Her feelings of being an imposter and her anxiety issues just resonated with me and I loved her need to figure out the mysteries of the school--and whatever she doesn't understand. I also loved her two friends Janelle and Nate and the dynamic that they have with Stevie.) was the romance. I didn't feel like it added anything to the story and I just... didn't care for it? I didn't HATE it and it certainly didn't make me want to stop reading the book entirely, but it just didn't add anything to the story for me. I would have preferred them as just... butting heads with a sort of rivalry? My perception of David may be colored, though, on the fact that I thought he was the one who projected that Truly Devious letter onto her wall that one night just to mess with her. Plus, I trust him about as far as I can throw him.

Other than that, this was a great book to start off the new year. I seriously cannot wait for the continuation. And I hope, beyond all hope, that I finally get some answers.
