Rarely do I not finish a book. Especially one that I have waited for. This is one of those books that I'm putting on the shelf until I have nothing at all left to read. Far to many faux pas and inconsistencies Ones that I just cant get over that add to the non-existent plot to the book. Maybe I will enjoy it later. For now...nah

I struggled so much to finish this book. I really want to like it and find the world building around time travel interesting, but theres just so much going on and yet nothing at the same time. This series really just needs serious editing down, the books are way too long and dont meaningfully contribute to the plot.

Rounding up from 2.5 stars. I dunno, I tend to enjoy a slow book with lots of detail and side stories and Gabaldon is a very descriptive writer, I've got such clear pictures in my head of the Frasers' house, etc. And I liked that this one was less violent (except for the bear chapter, WTF, that was unnecessary) and not rape-y at all; I almost didn't read this installment for fear it would be another book full of sexual assault. I like Claire and Brianna and Ian and Rachel quite a bit, and there were some really interesting new characters (Emily, Elspeth). But as many other reviewers have mentioned....what actually happened? For 900 pages, there was almost no real plot and no new stories. I don't feel like the story progressed much. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, was a standing member of the Bad Decisions Book Club way too many nights in a row, and....it's been like three days since I finished it and I can't remember much of what happened? Also there was WAY too much religion in this book for my tastes. I really didn't like the
Spoiler Brianna's pregnancy side plot. Earlier in the book she's very clear she doesn't want to get pregnant due to the risks and that is totally brushed off once it happened. And we skip the entire pregnancy pretty much in any case. I'm pretty sure it's just a device to keep Brianna, Roger, et al, stuck in the 1700s at the end of the series because the baby won't be able to go through the stones. Why not just have them like their lives there and chose to stay?
. I'm glad I waited to check this out of the library as I doubt I'll re-read even if it takes 10 years for the next installment.

Ahhh, I've waited so many years for this book. Such a treasure to finally read it, and know that there will be at least one more in the series.

Whew, this book took over a month to read. Besides being long (over 1400 pages) it takes longer to read and understand historical and unusual situations. I was glad to read the very last sentence, which seems to promise a #10 someday.

It’s hard to separately review this book on its own rather than as a part of a larger world created by Diana Gabaldon. If you are someone who has read this far in this series, you know and love so many of these characters as to make the love of them completely indistinguishable from the love of this time bendy sometimes-frivolous but always m-entertaining series. I will say, however, that it is so comforting and heartening to have an older women main character at the point with all her complexities, talents, desires, flaws, and urges. We’ve enjoyed watching the world develop around and within her for so many pages and, at this point, she and the other main characters (and honestly a lot of the fascinating side characters) are so well fleshed out as to make them feel a part of oneself… as if you truly were a part of the story. I’m very sad to reach the end of the currently readable saga.
