So it took me 5 months to read, but I do read a lot of other things in between for my book club so that’s part of it. The part of it is that it was a very slow read. The book is very long and very detailed. I don’t feel like any action really started happening until the last 3rd of the book. And when the action picked up so did the ease of reading. I love outlander and I love this book, it just wasn’t as action packed as the other one.
What can I say? I love these characters like they are
my own family. It is borderline absurd how many times I choked up while reading, caught up in even the smallest emotional moments simply because I love them so much. So while the plot was a little all over the place in this book, I took the many twists and turns in stride, choosing to enjoy the surprises instead of critique them. I will say that it feels right for the series to come to an end soon. There’s comes a point where a series begins to degrade (How many near-death experiences can two people have in sum total?). I think in one more book she could give us the last big piece of the relationship/reconciliation puzzle. But as for this book, I did enjoy it.

Jesus H Roosevelt Christ. I damn near threw the book across the room at one point...okay, twice. Jaysus! Why Gabaldon?! WHY?!?!?!
Like all the books in the series, it's well written. I was looking forward to the story being all finished, wrapped up is some perfect bow, wallowing in the sorrow of the conclusion of the series. It was supposed to be the last book. I was looking forward to that. But, no. She damn near stooped my heart and then ends the book with that open ending?! We waited seven years or something for this book and she gives us an open ending wondering what the fuck happens next? Not cool, Gabaldon. You could have added a couple more chapters and wrapped things up, but no. Why?! Rude.

Worth the wait
I was a little concerned when I read a few reviews before purchasing’Bees’ because some people seemed to be disappointed. I shouldn’t have worried. I was transported right back to Fraser’s Ridge and immersed in Claire & Jaimie’s lives. No one writes quite like Diana Gabaldon, her attention to detail is superb and as in the other books in the Outlander world, I lost myself in the stories and the history

Stunning, detailed writing, as always. But it reads more like part two of a three part tome that includes books 8, 9 (this book), and the unfinished 10th of the series. Gabaldon made no real effort to tie up any loose ends at the end of this book at all, much the same as the last book.
I enjoyed parts and other parts just dragged. The pacing seemed so off, especially toward the end. Without giving away spoilers, I just don't understand how the events on Fraser's Ridge (which took months) jived with the events in Savannah (which seemed to just take days or maybe a couple of weeks?). And that ending! How could she just leave it like that, knowing it will take her another bloody five or more years to finish the next book! Ugh!
I so wanted to absolutely love this book after waiting years for this next installment of the Outlander series. I'm still working through my unmet expectations and disappointment that "Go Tell the Bees That I'm Gone" didn't advance many, if any, of the mysteries or loose ends that we've picked up along the way, nor was there much drama or excitement that we've come to know from this series either. Instead, this book was quiet. It was peaceful and meandering. It was largely sweet and joyful and spent among our beloved characters and introduced many new friends as well.
Diana Gabaldon is an extremely talented writer and I can only imagine the pressure she must feel to tie up this soon-to-be 10 book series. So many unanswered questions!! I'm going to take this book for what it I think it was meant to be - the calm before the storm. The resting place that we needed between books. I can only imagine how this series will end, but for now, I'm going to bask in the glow of this beautiful ongoing saga.

DNF. I hate that I didn’t finish this. I wanted to love it so badly! I love Jamie and Claire. I care about these characters and have been reading this series since 2010. However, I feel like Diana should have wrapped this all up in fewer books. They are long and dense and could be paired down. I got 265 pages into Bees and had to stop. I was just so bored! There’s only so much war, babies, and trivial day to day tasks I can take after eight other books of the same thing. I googled spoilers and honestly, I’m glad I stopped reading. I’ll always cherish this series but this book and the next are going to be a no for me.
The first third of this book is great. And then… not. The Grey family could not be less interesting and she’s introduced even more of them. Plus additional random Quakers we’re supposed to care about. Sigh. I can’t quit these books but there was a lot of skimming here for me.
