This could have been much better, I would rather give 2.5 stars. Not a total waste of time, but just a weak unfolding of what could have been an engaging, more substantial storyline.

I'm so frustrated because I feel bamboozled by this book! The first half of the book, I was fairly invested. I was eager to find out the 'truth' of what happened and solve the mysteries. However, they mysteries are ALL solved within the last 50 pages, and not only where they unsatisfying, but I'm just confused at the author's decision. Perhaps more worrisome was the author's decision to use issues of race and racial tension. I think it was present primarily for a shock factor, and I don't think it was done well at all.

It started off great, and I couldn't wait to come home from work and read more, but in the end I was just incredibly disappointed. So, so disappointed.

This story could have been shortened by AT LEAST 100 pages. The author is really fond of tangents and ramblings for pages on details that may have to do with the setting but really don't affect the story whatsoever. For the vast majority of the time, nothing is happening. The writing is decent and the mystery is intriguing, so at first the reader doesn't even notice.
But around the 200 page mark you become suddenly aware that you are 50% done with this story and nothing at all has happened. No clues. No answers. No nothing. And you start wondering what the hell you've been reading and if you just missed the part where the author moved the story along. But no. You haven't.
I won't give away the unending but it's entirely unbelievable and unsatisfactory after what you have to sit through to get there.

It was alright. I felt like the entire narration by the reporter could have been completely cut out, but since the author was a reporter she probably has an emotional attachment to a part of the book that could have been eliminated. Also, it was no secret what had happened. It just wasn't much of a mystery to me. The twists were more gentle curves.

I enjoyed this book but found it hard to keep up with the characters and was constantly confused about which name was which character.

I found it hard to feel sympathy or empathy for the characters of this book and I found the overall pacing problematic.
