"Show them what you can do."

Witchy is set in a world where magical ability is indicated by the length of one's hair. After watching her father burned for his abilities, Nev's used a spell to hide the incredible length of her hair.

There are so many cool elements of this story, and I really wished they all came together in a way that worked for me as a reader. Despite being intrigued by the magical system, I struggled to engage with the story or the characters. It's the first book in a series and I wish a little more time had been given to developing characters to let us get to know them better.

It's the debut graphic novel from this artist. I'd be curious to see future projects from them because I do think there are some great ideas here, but I don't think I'll be continuing this particular series. Still, I can see other readers really enjoying it.

I very much super loved this book! The plot! The characters! The diversity! The world building! The art!

This books was literally all that. It was so well written, and packed a lot of story into not a lot of pages without making it feel like the plot was being shoved down my throat. All of the characters are so interesting and unique and very much left me wanting more. I really loved the journey of growth that the main character went on and now it wasn't easy for her to get over her trauma, and that no one expected her to.

The art style in this book is GORGEOUS and carries so much of the story on its own. I was so fascinated by all of the little details that were included!

I genuinely cannot wait to read the next book in this series and learn more about the world, the Big Bad, and our delightful main character (along with her sidekick Banana who is a sassy king!!!).

I wanted to read this graphic novel because I loved the cover and the synopsis sounded interesting. I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. This was just an average read for me. I liked the artwork but it wasn’t my favorite and the story was interesting but some of the dialogue was blank on this proof copy so that made it difficult to enjoy all of the plot. I did think this was a pretty unique story and I liked the fantasy setting but unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy this one.

I NEED A PART 2!! I absolutely loved this graphic novel about young Nyneve as they navigate living in this magical world where the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. It’s a coming-of-age narrative, a rumination on belonging, identity, and finding your power, but it’s also about living in fear because of things outwith has your control, and so much more! I loved it! Can’t wait to read more from Ariel Slamet Ries.
