A Rule Against Murder

Louise Penny

4.03 AVERAGE

4 stars. We finally get some backstory about Armand Gamache! We learn about his parents - primarily his father - and a bit of his childhood life. This is also the first book that takes place outside of Three Pines (but not too far, mind)!

Weirdly I felt that the actual murder behind the story was lacklustre, but I don't actually think Penny ever meant for us to focus on it too much. Instead, this was a very good dive into the anatomies of family relationships and the power of self-delusion. The stories we tell ourselves may originally have no basis in truth, but the more we believe in them the more they manifest into reality.

Louise Penny never disappoints, this is another wonderful Armand Gamache mystery.

I continue to like the lackadaisical nature of these books enough to continue listening to them on audio, but goodness I still don’t get the full pull of this series. The setting of this one was nice at the summer resort, but I found myself missing the village of Three Pines and the food descriptions I’ve come to enjoy in the first three books. I didn’t care as much about this murder as I did about the dynamics of Peter Morrow’s family.

Enjoyed, but there is a bit of a formula for many and I find it silly that we have a small town with so many connections to murders. I will continue to read the series though because I am definitely getting attached to the characters.

I hate Peter. That is all.
