I expected this one to be light and fluffy, but... man, was it creepy!

This story bears a similarity to the plot of the movie The Innocents, though it is quite a bit less icky than the movie. Notably the ghosts are eerie and the love story believeable, but the sub story of the reporter just irritated me.

Loved it! It was an entertaining read that kept me glued. I started it in the morning and finished it by bedtime. I'd recommend it to anyone!

I was reading multiple things at the same time, and this one was one I was least interested in picking back up, at first. About halfway through, I would have given it a 3. But the rest of the book convinced me it's worth a 4. If you find it slightly on the slow side in the beginning, push through it, and you won't be sorry.

The story of a divorced couple getting a second chance, with a far stronger supernatural element than I was expecting.

Andie wants to cut all ties with her ex husband North before she accepts her boyfriend's marriage proposal, and visits his office to return his alimony checks and ask him to stop sending them. Instead, she somehow ends up agreeing to help him with his two new wards for a month.

She ends up in a creepy castle of a house, caring for two very hurt, very wary children that
Spoilerhave been dealing with ghosts, on top of their grief over the death of all the people they ever loved
.

Andie is slowly making progress with the children and is even dealing with some of her own issues, many of them relating to North, when she is forced to face the fact that the house is indeed haunted. Determined to get rid of the ghosts that have been keeping the children from leaving the house, Andie starts doing research and reaches out to "experts" in the field, leading to a chaotic exorcism that everyone and their mother ends up attending.

North was my favorite character in the book despite being in the background for a big part of it, and
Spoilerthe part where he tells Andie that he adored her but just hadn't told her
gave me all the feels!

An engaging story with a satisfying happy ending, that the heroes earn after dealing with ghosts, as well as their own past issues and fears.

I hated to only give this book two start because I absolutely adore [a:Jennifer Crusie|19005|Jennifer Crusie|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1295982567p2/19005.jpg] and this is the only book by her I've ever struggled through, It just didn't hold my attention like her other works did.

Going into Maybe this time I thought I'd be like [b:Ask Me Why|45007201|Ask Me Why|Harloe Rae|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1559227972l/45007201._SY75_.jpg|69667595] or a modern day version of [b:Charming the Prince|450924|Charming the Prince (Once Upon A Time, #1)|Teresa Medeiros|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1429367716l/450924._SY75_.jpg|439559] . I really like the falling for the kids then their guardians troupe. A very large chunk of the story is about ghosts and the house. I did enjoy the main character. She stands up for herself and what she thinks is best she takes no shit form anyone there are a lot of struggles in this story. Are ghosts real? There is a sort of love triangle. The kids are very difficult to get through their barriers. and so many minor problems they struggle with throughout. I don't know specifically what made this so hard to stay interested in because parts I found very interesting and fun it was just spread out with a lot of problems that I personally didn't find captivating but that's just me. I still love Jennifer Crusie and will continue to read her work :)

First off, this is a Jennifer Crusie book so I was pretty sure that I was going to enjoy it. And I did enjoy it but unlike most Crusie books this one took a bit of time to get started. It was a bit slow to begin with and it wasn't until I was about 100 pages in before I was turning the pages and wondering what was going to happen next.

This is also a departure from Crusie (at least in my experience) because this has at least a slight paranormal bent to it. Not something I'm used to reading with this author! Not that I'm complaining about it; on the contrary it was amusing and added some definite humor to the book. Isolde Hammersmith, the medium in the book, is one of those fun characters that you love the minute she appears on the page.

That's one of Crusie's strengths in my opinion and this book is no exception. Her characters are fun and quirky in a lot of ways. Even the characters that are meant to be the villains in the story are enjoyable and interesting. You love to hate them!

I ADORE Jenny Crusie. She's starting to delve into different genres a little, but still keeps the heart of her stories as romantic comedy. I love how she ties characters from past books into her new ones, creating a fun little universe.
Andie is definitely one of my favorite characters!
