Thanks for the free book PRH International

I'm definitely coming back to this once it comes out!

Overall, I really liked the narrators throughout the audiobook and I love that Ali is dabbling in dual POV! It was great to see both Eli and Rue's POVs throughout, especially where their conflicting companies and opinions are concerned.

I will say that right off the bat, I was immediately thrown into their world and while listening, it was hard to comprehend everything that was going on. I will say that I think I would have been more invested in the story if I had physically read it rather than listening to it on audio.

I did really like the backstories of both Rue and Eli and I liked that Ali really put a focus on their mental health and past childhood and adult trauma.

It is by far Ali's sexiest book and there was a scene that specifically will live in my head rent free for a while.

The conflict didn't feel as high stakes as Ali's past work and that deterred me from focusing on the story at times; however, I did enjoy myself and I will be doing a reread with a physical copy.

Thank you PRH Audio for the free audiobook!

A major no from me. Let it be clearly stated that I enjoy a steamy book, I am not shy when it comes to the books I read and the amount of steam they sometimes had. Heck, I don’t even mind when they’re not super connected before they entangle themselves together. So that isn’t my issue here at all. It started off okay. I liked the idea of the workplace rivals sort of situation, it’s worked before so why not do it again. Where this book starts and where it ends feels like two completely different books, I’m still a bit perplexed by it. I got on board with the two MCs and how they came together, but for the entire book they lacked any sort of chemistry or connection. And since it’s “so not normal” for both of them to have these bigger feelings I expected the chemistry to be off the charts. Maybe part of the problem is I just didn’t click with the fmc. At first I liked that she was different, but then I thought about it and she’s really not all that different than Hazelwood’s other fmcs. Her backstory intrigued me but the more I read from her pov the less I liked her. I even tried switching to the audio to see if I would like it better and I somehow liked it worse. I think the female narration made her even harder to like. But that could just be me. I have a lot more thoughts but don’t want to be too spoilery so I’ll wrap it up here.

There were little pieces of the story I liked but overall it’s a big no from me and I am not sure I will be continuing with Ali’s books moving forward after back to back misses.

If the day comes that I do not absolutely melt in a puddle over an Ali Hazelwood book, then I am dead. But even my ghost would try to get a copy of this bad boy because it is that bloody good.

Quite simply no one writes banter like Ali. No one can have me cackling in one sentence, crying in the next while also getting a basic understanding of patents and research grants.

This book is all about how “to be loved is to be known” and I can’t get enough.

Thank you to Hachette for the ARC on NetGalley 🖤

With every new Ali Hazelwood book I read, I think to myself ‘this is the best one yet’ and ‘Not In Love’ followed this pattern, it was an incredibly anticipated read for me and I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype.  I am so glad that the worry was for nothing, because, simply put, I love this book.  It was emotional, witty and romantic with interesting characters and an engaging plot.  So engaging that I essentially inhaled the book in 48 hours.

Looking deeper, I feel I have to start with the characterisation, particularly Rue.  Rue’s character is constructed in an authentic way, she is not called socially awkward because she is just a bit of an introvert who likes her own company.  No, Rue is direct, doesn’t engage in meaningless conversation and has developed an icy persona, because she just doesn’t want to talk to you.  I loved this about her.  I also loved the fierce manner in which she loved and defended the few friends who she was close to, she is a character so full of dimension she almost leaps out of the page.  There were also so many parts where I just wanted to scoop her up and give her the biggest hug I could, because, well, her trauma.  And the other part of this dual perspective story, Eli, what a man!  To start off with and get the shallow part out of the way, hot.  The fact that he is described as a hulking tree trunk of a man (as all Ali Hazelwood love interests should be) with the nice nose and the gorgeous messy curls is not enough, he has to get dialogue like that too?  And care for his sister? And have a behemoth dog with a ridiculous name?  I’ll say it again, what a man.  Additionally, the side characters! They were all buzzing with personality, there were no 2D paper cut out side characters to fill space.  Tish was hilarious and honestly I think I knew I adored her as a character from the first chapter where she expressed how much she adored her cat, because, well, same!  Maya’s sarcasm and wit? Chefs kiss.  And the drama and dynamic of the Harkness team! Beautiful, perfect, more please!

Like all Ali Hazelwoods books, ‘Not In Love’ is compulsively readable, the story has a great flow and I always felt compelled to turn the page and keep going.  There weren’t any times I felt it was stagnant and I just wanted the story to keep going.  This book was so, so much spicier than her others, and oh boy, did she do it well.  If I had pearls I’d clutch them, I think at certain points I blushed, bravo Ali, bravo.  It wasn’t just all spice, I loved watching Rue fall in love without even realising what it was and that she was capable, and Eli.  Sweet obsessed in love Eli who was so gone for her from the beginning.  Masterful writing right there, I was kicking my little heels and squealing internally while reading about them.  I also loved the super sly references to other characters in the Aliverse, I saw the name Mallory Greenleaf and smiled so wide! I miss those characters from the moment I turn the last page of their books and to see them again, even if it is just their names being tossed out in reference, it gives me the most delightful hit of serotonin.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Australia for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review, these thoughts are all my own.

Different in tone from her other books. I prefer some plot with my spice.

Thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for the eARC!
I was nervous going into this one even though I'm already a huge Ali Hazelwood fan. I knew going in that this one was going to be tonally different from her other titles and the fact that this book is much heavier with the spice (I'm very indifferent when it comes to spice in books but if it ends up being too much and not a lot of other plot for me to focus one, I'll quickly lose interest)but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the fmc, Rue, and the way her social anxiety & her childhood trauma was dealt with (also, she was actually tall!). As for Eli, it did take me a good while to warm up to him. Sometimes i found his chapters annoying but necessary as you got more insight for the science/career plot of the book. I could've lived without knowing his lustful thoughts on Rue (look I get it dude, but like it was excessive) but towards the end, he did win me over. I did struglle with the first half of the book because it was so heavy on the spice but then once the career subplot started to come together and the feels started happening (lol, I'm trying so hard not to spoil, forgive me!). This book did deal with heavier topics that I thought were done pretty well and there was a bit of Ali's humor present in this but not as much as I would've liked. I wouldn't say this is one of my favorites but I did end up really liking it more than I thought I would.
