Woof. This book is the worst kind of queer representation. Most of the characters are reduced to trope-y versions of themselves to check diversity boxes. You’re telling me that a DEI Office brochure’s worth of queers all live in a random spot in PA and are all buddies? Yeah, I don’t think so. Also, I completely agree with other reviewers that it’s wild that these kids are giving Tumblr level takes about capitalism in the middle of the apocalypse?
I enjoyed the premise, and Nick is interesting (if a bit under developed). The book doesn’t shy away from gore or body horror which is great. However, the writing is very repetitive, and lack luster.

I'm not sure how to feel in regards to this book. It was recommended by a person who works in Barnes & Noble when I asked him to offer me anything to read. I thought I was someone with an open mind but at some point I felt it was even blasphemy to read this (I'm an atheist). I think the whole plot and story was interesting, just that I can't get my head around why the genders and all other stuff was necessary.

Very close to 5 stars. I ate this up. This book approaches difficult subjects without feeling heavy-handed or didactic. It’s compulsively readable, paced perfectly, and the emotional pay-off absolutely lands. (Oh, and the body horror? Horrifying yet also strangely beautiful and I could not look away.) The only reason it’s not a 5 is because the ending felt a bit trite; I was expecting a resolution just as complex as the rest of the book, but unfortunately the finale felt a bit rushed. I will still read everything this author writes.
