I have tried to start this book three separate times now and each time I find myself almost falling into a reading slump with how much I don't care to keep reading. I think it could be a totally fine and good book but it's just not grabbing me and with what I've read from other reviews I don't think it'll be my cup of tea.
the brief review i gave a friend who asked if it was good:
good body horror, good religious world ending cult, good monster/trans metaphors. annoying YA issues, unsatisfying ending, didn't really feel like the characters connected to each other at all.

Alright, this is the second of Andrew's books that I've read and wow, this book was just as amazing as the first one I read (The Spirit Bares Its Teeth)! Once again, I resonated with the MC and honestly, with a lot of the other characters in this book. The plot was solid and the detail was chef's kiss, which I see is to be expected with Andrew. The queer and autistic rep in this book was awesome as well, making me feel appreciated ❤️ Just every part of this book was incredible!

This is my 3rd AJW book and I can tell this was his first, his baby. I would love to see this book reworked for AJW's talents now, especially after just finishing Compound Fracture. More development for Nick and the world-building itself would make this book perfect, but it was deeply touching all the same. Can't wait for You Weren't Meant to Be Human!

This book follows a group of queer teens as they navigate a really unique apocalypse. I really enjoyed the world and the ideas! That said, the execution was pretty sloppy. The story lost itself to talk of identity that got pretty repetitive. I think this might just have been because it is heavily YA. Nothing was really wrong or terrible (except one line I can't let go), but it just lacked some plot-depth. The one thing that bothered me was a line about Nick likening his autism to Benji turning into a diseased flesh monster. That was a bit .... either offensive to autistic people or just dumb. Not sure which is worse.

YA is just not my thing. And the dissonance of a religiously indoctrinated kid speaking perfectly "PC" language - completing a list of neopronouns - in the apocalypse is. weird
