4.14 AVERAGE

Gosh I liked this book, it’s sank its claws in me and didn’t let go. From the first page I was captivated and Benji is definitely the main reason why. His internal struggle and everything he goes through, sometimes he does stupid things but you can’t but feel for him, we’ve all been sixteen once.

Now, the book has its flaws, so maybe tomorrow I’ll feel more like giving it 4.5

despite loving the first book i read from this author, i couldn’t get through much of this one. when representation turns into each character having token identities, i get upset over “representation” for representation’s sake
adventurous challenging sad tense medium-paced

as a queer this was wayyy too invested into the queer side of things when this is a story about the apocalypse. if the gore was taken out, defo a kids book

The book comes off very YA, and the writing in some parts left more to be desired. I wish there was a bit more world building, especially since the premise is so interesting. Overall super disturbing yet weirdly fascinating.

nothing is more cathartic then watching a trans kid absolutely tear apart an oppressive religion. this is an absolutely beautiful book.

TWs:
Graphic: Religious bigotry, apocalypse, death, injury/injury detail, transphobia, deadnaming/misgendering, vomit, blood, body horror
Moderate: Violence, gun violence, toxic relationship, murder, death of parent
Brief: Gaslighting

This book just fuels my 'I need to be a monster, I need to ruin my enemies', I feel so SEEN.

It feels quite slow at first, but it definitely vamped up the pace. I'm utterly in love with just the somewhat casual representation, and the fact there's not a major focus on the transphobia that the MC faces. The euphoria Benji experiences when gendered correctly and people use his real name, I still relate so much to it even now, after being out for 8 years.

The author's writing style is absolutely amazing, I'm constantly gripped and genuinely found it hard to put the book down

The concept for this book is really cool so I kept wanting to like it but it fell short for me, probably because I’m not the right audience. There is good LGBTQ+ representation in the book but I felt that many characters were undeveloped. The pacing felt a little off at times too.
