One line synopsis: Gretchen finds a man that's as ugly and prickly and misanthropic as her Sphinx cat.

I loved the Beauty and the Beast movies (live action and cartoon), and I've read many brilliant books based off of the story, but I honestly could not get into this book. Made it as far as chapter 8 before deciding that 'Nope. I still don't like Gretchen or Hunter.". This was my first foray into the series, but I think I'll leave it at that

I reread bits and pieces of this book all the time. I fricken love Hunter and Gretchen is obviously perfect for him. I wouldn't say the entire book is 5+ stars? But I feel like I reread most of it enough to justify the 5 plus star rating.

This is one of those times when I wish that Goodreads had a more complex rating system. I think that this book was not without it's merit but there were things about it that were really difficult to get past for me. I consistent complaint that I have about these romance novels is the lack of development between the main characters, but that it something that I feel like I can't allow to influence the rating because it's how these novels are.

Beyond that, a lot of Hunter and Gretchen's reactions to things were incredibly unrealistic or just... off. In places it almost seemed like Clare was writing a totally different character and thought the scene might fit better into this book than another one in this series.

Overall, I liked the storyline of this book and I thought the idea of him being both physically beastly and emotionally withdrawn was nice. I just would have liked to see a bit more development through between "beast" Hunter and "prince" Hunter. I also felt like we were really left hanging there at the end, I was expecting at least one more chapter to tie things together.

Gretchen was lacking depth in a lot of places but I really liked her quippy, snarky personality. She balanced Hunter well in that regard, since he needs someone that won't let him bulldoze them. I also think her confidence was required to advance the plot, since he had no idea how to.

It was fine, but nothing to write home about in my opinion. It is also hard to create a good Beauty and the Beast retelling because it is such a played out trope. I think the author did okay with what she was working with and the people that are picking up this book aren't really looking for a intricate plot with lots of twists and turns. They want an easy romance that doesn't take too much brain power to process. I liked this book as a palate cleanser between more detailed novels.

*2024 reread*

my first impression of the book stayed the same: it’s a fun hot story, one of my favorite retelling of “beauty and the beast”. i literally stayed up till 3 am to finish it.

i loved the characters (except for Eldon 😬), and even though the conflict at the end was infuriating, i could understand where it came from. but i wish there were a bit more at the end, i’m a fan of cute epilogues

I really enjoyed this 2nd book in Jessica Clare’s Billionaire Boys Club series! The first one was fun, but this one was just so good. I loved the Beauty and the Beast retelling aspect. I loved the character of Hunter and his vulnerability and I loved Gretchen and her sense of humor and bluntness. I listened to this on audio and I think the narrator did such a great job bringing out the personalities of both. It was just an interesting mix of sweetness and well- written erotica. I really loved how Gretchen was such a strong female character and how she didn’t take any crap from anyone, lol. I think the author did such a great job of conveying the internal emotions of Hunter as well, and it was hard not to fall in love with him! Overall this is my favorite romance/erotic book I’ve ever read! I am excited to keep going in this series, if nothing more but you keep hearing from Hunter and Betchan :-) I’m so glad I found Jessica Clare!
