It was cute, but I think you could tell this is a somewhat novice writer. I had to re-read some things a few times to make sure they made sense, and there were a few times I felt like the author used big extravagant words even when they weren't needed. It also didn't mix well with the times the book felt like more on the "high school side" like the author is still developing their unique writing style. Overall it could've been written out better instead of like the author was trying to fit into a mold they don't need to conform into.
This was a super cute and fast read. The MCs were fun and had great chemistry. It was just a little to fast paced for me when it came to the climax and ending. I would have like a little more. This was a slow burn in terms of length of the story that also made the pacing a little odd with how short this was. But I did enjoy it and want to continue the series!

Ehhh. This one was just ok for me. I think that if it was longer, I would have enjoyed it more.
There is just something extra special about a sports romance.
Charlie Denton is 26 and a sports journalist for a dying online newspaper, The Cambridge Tribune Charlie’s boss is a complete dick and is demanding that Charlie write a story about a local pro-hockey star. She has eight days to get the story from the very private hockey goalie, or she is fired.
Duke Harrison is the goalie for the Boston Blades. He is 34 and has been the star goalie for the past 10 years. Duke is very private and refuses to give any time or attention to the media. Especially reporters. But when he meets Charlie, he is instantly intrigued and there is something about her that keeps pulling him towards her. Enough for him to give her an interview… on his terms
Duke and Charlie were wonderful. They were completed each other. Their banter was the best and their chemistry was straight fire. Both of them were at a crossroad in their careers, struggling with what the next steps should be. Charlie needs to get this story in order to get achieve her dreams on working for a well established newspaper, but is it really work the risk. Duke is absolutely swoon-worthy. It would be next to near impossible not to fall for him. Can he trust Charlie enough to let down his walls? Can he trust that she is interested in him, Duke the man, or just getting close to him to get her story?

Trick Play by Maria Luis was a fast read. Grumpy/Sunshine who doesn’t love that?
They say that love sometimes feels like you’re being hit by a bag of bricks. No. Love feels like you’ve been struck with multiple pucks flying at the five-hole, and you’ve got no gear on to protect yourself.
Go read it if you’re looking for a quick/funny read

I really enjoyed the age gap trope and Duke's character came across as the hulky grumpy man who was a teddy bear inside. I constantly wanted to squeeze him whenever his grumpy mood entered a room. Charlie was a fun heroine to follow and I enjoyed the role she played in the book and the meet-cute that these two had.
I thought the ending was slightly rushed or the reveal of both characters backgrounds could have been mentioned differently in the story. Maybe earlier on or at the same time but prolonged the resolve part of the storyline because it definitely came across as a quick tie up at the end. I will definitely carry on with the rest of the series because I love an ice hockey romance and I always find Maria Luis's books fun to read.

While I liked the book, the story and character arc was really predictable and a bit .. boring.
It’s a sweet read, but certainly won’t stick with me for more than a day or two.
