I am super annoyed at this book. I know I usually find something to love, but I chalk that up (or is it chock that up?) to pretty much only reading recommended books. This one was recommended AND it started out really well — good characters, compelling plot… I even stayed up late last night to finish it! What a waste. Totally stupid ending that was not satisfying at all. It felt like the author just chucked it in at the end to tie up all the loose ends in the laziest way possible. Ugh!!! Do not bother with it. :(

I normally love KA, but this did not work for me. It sprawled, and had so many characters - none of whom engaged me. Occasionally I was surprised and disappointed by cliché from an author I really do admire and whose prose I have found, in other books, to be original, moving and delightful.
Not as good as Life after life and god in ruins. The ending felt a little rushed but the rest was a good yarn!
I am abandoning this book. I have loved past Kate Atkinson books, but this novel just didn't pull me in. I got to page 165, then read the final chapters and realized I had no desire to return to the middle. I know it's dangerous to jump ahead with Atkinson in particular because she usually has such a great way of crafting her story lines to collide at the end, but this ending was just "Meh". I felt she had too many characters and none were particularly interesting.
Slow build but then abrupt tying up of all plot lines
I loved these characters and the way Atkinson portrays a seedy London with a wry wit. I admit I had to read it twice to get to know all the characters well enough and catch all the nuances and foreshadowing. After the second read, I'm enchanted with this story, and I'll miss the characters! Maybe I'll have to read it a third time

I love Atkinson’s writing.
This didn’t impact me like Life After Life, but felt more in the vein of her Jackson Brodie series, set in 1926.
The characters are well crafted & fun.

Lots of characters, lots of action, corrupt police, swanky illegal nightclubs, and many, many characters revolving around Nellie Coker and her children, all with different (and dubious in some cases) talents. The book was a little daunting in size, and so, keeping track of the characters was a bit of a challenge, however, lots of humour and action kept me going.
