Good driving audiobook, was expecting to cry but didn't. Definitely a sad one though...
I don't have words for this book. Such a heartbreaking journey. I cannot believe I didn't know the tragedy of the Wilhelm Gustloff before this. A must read!
As a full cast audio production, this was a wonderful listen. I learned a bit of WWII history that I, like the rest of the world, never knew.
The connections to the current refugee situation worldwide and the political mayhem at home were alarming. History is repeating itself.
The author's note was particularly poignant.

Showing how different people can come together and help one another, this beautiful, tragic, and emotional journey of survival will give the reader a powerful view of wartime through the eyes of the youth.
I so wish I could give this book more. It gives such unique perspectives on a time period so well worn in historical fiction and yet... For starters, one of the characters I found almost entirely useless and not really worth writing about. He seemed to add nothing to the story and most of his chapters were made up of letters chock full of complete lies that he wrote in his head and never sent. For that reason, I ended up skimming most of his chapters.
While I enjoyed the other three main characters much more, the brevity of each chapter meant that it was difficult to get into one characters head before being pulled into another.
Additionally, the synopsis of this book is completely misleading and I truly wish I hadn't read it. The majority of the book has nothing to do with the tragedy that the synopsis would be the main focus.
Like I said, this book presented some really unique perspectives...but there are just soooo many other world war II era novels that I think are more worth everyone's time.

Using four different points of view, this historical fiction set during WWll gives a look into the fear of refugees, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, and the odd plot line of art thefts. It took me a bit to be able to switch between POVS. I did enjoy the sentence structure - a lot of short, but beautifully crafted sentences - but felt that the ending was extremely rushed — two letters 24 years later were unsatisfactory in explaining the characters’ fates, especially when trying to weave in the mystery of the art theft.
Pertama kali baca HisFic (historical fiction) dari Elex, terjemahannya enak. Bacanya cepat karena terdiri dari banyak bab, jadi banyak halaman yang nggak penuh. Bingung juga aku mesti senang atau sedih karena ini 😅
