Using four different points of view, this historical fiction set during WWll gives a look into the fear of refugees, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, and the odd plot line of art thefts. It took me a bit to be able to switch between POVS. I did enjoy the sentence structure - a lot of short, but beautifully crafted sentences - but felt that the ending was extremely rushed — two letters 24 years later were unsatisfactory in explaining the characters’ fates, especially when trying to weave in the mystery of the art theft.
Pertama kali baca HisFic (historical fiction) dari Elex, terjemahannya enak. Bacanya cepat karena terdiri dari banyak bab, jadi banyak halaman yang nggak penuh. Bingung juga aku mesti senang atau sedih karena ini 😅

4.5. Amazing book! It’s amazing to me how many stories about WWII there still are to be told. How such a disaster as this can be forgotten by history is alarming. Beautifully told. And I loved the connection to her 1st novel, Between Shades of Grey!

This book was so well written and so heartbreaking, that I had to take a day before I could write a review. But let me start by saying that Ruta Sepetys is quickly becoming one of my favorite historical fiction writers. The way she brings her characters to life and immerses you into the world they are living in, everything else in your life will melt away when you are reading this book. It is a fictionalized story of a true event that sadly most people have never heard of. I won't give it away by telling what happens, but suffice it to say that you will most likely be needing tissues by the end of this book.
The best novel ever or the best novel ever? I can't decide.
It's like you have the whole world inserted in your heart, and then it's been violently ripped out.
Very nice . 100/10

This books was sooooo good! I normally don't like historical fiction, but I was hanging on to every word. Fabulous! Don't skip the authors note at the end! Tragic!
The one thing I really liked about this book is it told a WWII story that was new to me — about refugees trekking across the countryside trying to get to safety and a doomed ship.
Unfortunately, the 4 POV characters were very confusing at the beginning trying to keep all the characters straight, and I was completely lost about where each was and what they were doing. I kept re-reading chapters to try and figure out what was happening. The short chapters were great for momentum at the middle / end of the story, but at the beginning the constant switching made it hard to figure out what was going on.
Definitely a haunting story but the execution didn't work for me.
