I understand why people love this book now, it feels like a masterclass in storytelling. A heartfelt coming of age story with a little mystery mixed in (it says something similar on the cover lol). Well-written complex emotional characters and an engaging plot that progresses through the years, what more could you want?
I especially enjoyed the part where Kya is in jail and on trial, it was so rage inducing while also uncovering how others still feel about her

Ótrúlega góð! Langt síðan ég hef lesið bók í þessum anda og var allt sem ég vildi. Óska að ég hefði lesið hana áður en ég sá bíómyndina svo hún hefði komið meira á óvart en það gerði það þó að verkum að það var auðveldara að sjá umhverfið fyrir sér. Hugljúf, erfið og spennandi allt í senn. Miklu meiri dýpt og saga í bókinni en myndinni. Myndi lesa aftur.
What a beautiful story! This is the story of a girl growing up in the marshlands of North Carolina and learning to navigate life and love and so many other things. It was heartbreaking and exciting and hopeful. I loved the setting of the story and the author really brought the marsh to life. Although not perfect, I also really liked how the author portrayed true love compared to lust. It's been awhile since I've read a novel that I felt deserved five stars, and I'm glad to finally break the rut. I managed to read almost the entire second half of the book in a day, and that's while also taking care of a 3-month-old!
The marsh descriptions were poetic and soothing; I could have done without the murder plot line. Overall, a nice read.
Nitpick: *Why* was Asheville chosen as “the big city” whenever anyone needed to get something unavailable in the village? Today, that’s at least a six hour drive from the coast; in the 50s and 60s it would have been 10 hours or more. Plus, you’d pass through Raleigh (a bigger city) on the way - it would have been a drive of about three or four hours back then. Seems like an easy fact-check by just looking at a map.

Au centre de l'histoire, il y a Kya, une jeune fille abandonnée dans les marais de Caroline du Nord, qui doit apprendre à survivre dans un environnement plus qu'hostile. L'auteure m'a fait vivre les expériences de Kya avec une justesse et une poésie remarquable, me donnant l'impression d'être moi-même plongée dans les marais avec elle.
Ce roman est un hommage à la beauté et à la fragilité de la nature, mais c'est aussi une histoire de survie, d'amour, de trahison et de rédemption. L'écriture de Delia Owens est superbe, riche en détails et en images fortes, et l'intrigue est parfaitement maîtrisée, avec des rebondissements qui vous tiennent en haleine jusqu'à la fin.

“Hasta que, por fin, en un momento indeterminado, el dolor de su corazón desapareció como el agua al filtrase por la arena, seguía ahí, pero en lo más profundo. Kya puso la mano en la tierra húmeda y vital, y la marisma se convirtió en su madre”.

- Siento que cada libro que leo, es una oportunidad que le doy a otros más. Con este, le doy oportunidad a libros de la post guerra, a historias recónditas pero valiosas
- Tiene buen ritmo, te da lo suficiente para querer seguir leyendo. Me encanta que los capítulos sean breves.
- La historia me recuerda un poco al Caso de Harry Quebert, sin embargo, en este no hay tanto back and forth, sospechas que parecen llevar a algo y luego no, o un detective incompetente. Prefiero esta historia, no solo porque me resultó personal y evocó a mi propio pensamiento, pero porque está mejor construida la trama.
- Aún en español, la prosa es muy poética. Las metáforas y aforismos que usa Delia son un poema en sí mismos, y el hecho de que los capítulos sean tan cortos construye también esto. Me encanta, no puedo parar de leer
- Creía que Kya sí mató a Chase, y no la culpó, pero no me convencer esa trama. Luego pienso que más bien Tate lo hizo, tampoco sé si me convence o gusta ese desenlace, solo sé que quiero que termine con la idea que se había hecho Tate: el trabajando en el laboratorio, casado con Kya, viviendo en Sea Oaks, lejos del pueblo. Al final, Kya sí puede pertenecer a su mundo, y viceversa.
- Maldita sea, no me gustó el final: Si el juicio en realidad era contra el pueblo, al final ganaron ellos, no Kya. El final nos dice que ella era, después de todo, exactamente lo que pensaban. Que era salvaje, no había humanidad en ella, y entonces, vuelve la pregunta: las personas son excluidas porque son diferentes, o son diferentes porque son excluidas?
Ideas finales
- El concepto de “como una niña cualquiera”, al saludar a otra niña, al comer y jugar con su papá
- Me gusta el ir y venir en el tiempo de los capítulos, me atrapa.
- La narración de Kya se siente como un auténtico río de pensamiento de una niña de 8 años. Es doloroso acompañarla en su ignorancia, memoria escasa, e impotencia por sobrevivir y saberse atada al mundo
- Lloré mucho mucho con el capitulo 9: Jumpin’
- La pintura de la mamá!!!! El mejor foreshadowing.
I think I didn’t give myself a fair chance at this book because I was reading it at such a busy time…. I just was not totally taken by the story. The writing was beautiful and I really enjoyed the author’s style and voice. I just don’t know if I found the story all that interesting or the characters that compelling. I liked the nature bits more than the story bits.
