Marriage for One

3.75 AVERAGE

2.5 ⭐️ but rated up because GR doesn’t give half stars. Okay, I’m a silly little sucker for arranged marriage or marriage for convenience trope (hey, I like many tropes, I’m not hard to please here). Best part of the book? The authors play on a Titanic favorite, Rose and Jack. It started off strong and clever. It fell flat around 60% and by the spice, it was cringe, too little too late, and literally scrolling through to just finish. I never do that if it’s done right.

There is NO reason, and I repeat, NO reason for this book to be over 500 pages long. Here is the book: Rose, our FMC, is “NYC poor” and angsty, wanting to open up a coffee shop on Madison Ave in NYC because poor people can afford to do that. Some family relative (uncle, I think?) died and in his will he gave a property to Rose’s husband because even in death let’s add some patriarchy. Jack, our MMC, is a hot shot lawyer who fell in love with Rose at first sight so went through grand elaborate lengths to marry her and then convince her to fall in love with him.

Where did this go wrong? Well, why the hell was this 500 pages? The two MCs don’t even finally hook up until like 70% in. I almost DNF around 80% but had to find out the “twist” and secret Jack kept. It was the most underwhelming reveal and she forgives him after 8 days. Rose, way to stick to pretend guns because you are a poorly crafted FMC

4 out of 5⭐️
Rose and Jack, just like the Titanic. Except nobody died and they lived HEA.
I loved this, so simple and entertaining! Time flew by, it was fun, I loved her coffee shop and how he faced her sickness. I loved the fake marriage and the way he loves her (specially how he loves eating what she baked just because she was the one who baked it).

okay this was so so so so lovely, i never wanted it to end!!!

it made me realise i am a sucker for unloved characters that create their own family.

this was such a pleasant read and i've enjoyed it very much!!!

I feel like the weird kid in class...
I'm being overly generous with the three stars because I feel like something must be wrong with me to not think this is five stars like all the ratings i've been seeing but this...is not written well.

The good: I raced through it, because despite my issues with the book, the trope of surly, gruff, unreadable man falling for the quirky girl is a great freaking trope. Even with POV shifts the author kept Jack mysterious and compelling for most of the story until the switch was flipped. Can't fault romantic standing out in the cold. Rose is cute and her smile count won me over.

The bad: THE WRITING. He went to the store. He walked around the corner. She arranged the black steel cabinet next to the blue billowy curtains. Lots of short sentences and double adjectives and sentences that don't flow. Also the author heavily used those lines we see in all books "never felt like this before, never knew that part of her body existed" sort of things that at this point jump out at me as lazy writing. Not to mention the overt misunderstandings and misreadings of situations that I can dig if they're done well, but....yeah. I can excuse a lot for a good trope and I had to here. THings were just c l u n k y and disconnected and very basic.

Let's not....avoid the fact that the entire premise of the book is isn't really explained and is...uh...questionable.

SPOILER ALERT CAUSE IDK HOW TO DO THE SPOILER THING He saw her at a party and was somehow so lovestruck that he stalked her, investigated her current boyfriend, paid him off and then arranged to fake marry her to help her because one look at a party is all it takes ??????????????????????????????? i could see this as romantic despite the stalkerness if it was just explained more? If there were more meetings, if THEY ACTUALLY HAD HAD A CONVERSATION before he decided to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to fake marry a chick he saw from afar???? And here's the even more confusing thing, and please someone who has read this please explain, why was he trying to hold back from her if his whole goal was to be with her? WHat was his actual intention? Simply helping her out and being like hey that chick that smiled at a puppy deserves a chance! it legitimately makes no sense and I am very confused? DId i miss something when i started skim reading?

END SPOILERS

clearly this book is just not for me. I'm so glad people loved it, but I'll keep searching for this trope in a book I find to be written better.

What a book. I loved EVERYTHING about it.
