The internet has told me this is a controversial series in how polarized peoples' like for it is. I enjoyed Gardens of the Moon, despite the frenetic writing. I sat on the idea of embarking on the rest of the series for quite some time, in part because if I enjoyed the next book, the next few months of my reading life would be spoken for.
I had confused and nebulous expectations as I (kindle equivalent of) read the first pages. Would it be dark? Some of my favourite characters from the last book wouldn't make an appearance, so would I have any stake in the plot? Having now finished the last pages, I feel spent. I'm empty. There's a darkness to the book, but in that darkness is a small flicker of hope and optimism. The characters, all the characters (small throw away sentries included), are real and unique and you want them to win. Many don't and it hurts.
Deadhouse gates is magnificent. It awoke in me a fierce empathy and no deaths were reduced to a statistic, no matter how numerous.
The world building is detailed and enthralling, with only slightly too many rogue apostrophes. Memories of Ice awaits.

Deadhouse Gates is able to rely on past knowledge expounded on in Gardens of the Moon it is able to more deeply delve into character motivations and the greater conflict enveloping the world of Malazan making for a compelling and interesting read.
Erikson's work with theme in this book is near unparalleled and he sets up so many incredible but heart-wrenching moments.
In general, reading Erikson is like receiving a punch in the gut. It knocks the air out of you but makes you realize the beauty of being able to breathe.

Compared to the entry installment of this series, 'Gardens of the Moon', this novel is far, far better. In fact the opening chapter of 'Deadhouse Gates' was more enjoyable than the entirety of the first novel.
The dialogue, pacing and characterization problems from the first novel are also fixed in this addition.
The story arch of the 'Chain of Dogs' was absolutely incredible, with one of the most brilliant conclusions in any fantasy novel I have ever read.

Wow. Just amazing. What a delight this book was. So many lovable characters all jammed into this one book! I have to say, Deadhouse Gates was waaay better than Gardens on the Moon!
The book has only a few characters that continue their story from where book 1 left it. We get to see the familiar faces of Crokus, Fiddler, Apsalar and Kalam as they make their way back to Malazan territory. Fiddler and Kalam are stand out characters! Just like book 1, they are complicated and at times a bit bugging when they don't do the obvious things! But then a few chapters later you realize why they didn't.
My absolute favorite characters in this book were Coltaine, Duiker and Felisin. Coltaine as a Wickan Fist of Malazan was an absolute gem of a military commander. Utterly ruthless and yet fair and just. Captain Lull, Corporal List, Heboric, Baudin, Stormy, Gesler...well I could keep on going and not reach the end of the list of amazing characters. I applaud Steven Erikson at the complex characters he has written in a single book.
On the other hand, you have High Fist Pormqual, the Donald Trump of the Malazan Empire. I'm yet to learn how he managed to become a High Fist, being the kind of person he is. Hopefully some of the future books can explain. Maybehe can be resurrected so that he can be killed again and again for being THIS stupid in the books. I was gutted when Coltaine died because of Pormqual being too much of a goddamn coward! T_T
I think the weakest characters in this book were Icarium, Mappo and Crokus. Icarium and Mappo are such a strong duo and what the book kept hinting throughout about Icarium was never really delivered. Though, this being Malazan my friends keep telling me that sometimes the rewards come a few books later. I can wait. Crokus was also pretty much a side character for this book. After playing a crucial role last book, he was basically benched.
Well enough with the review. After finishing book 2, I immediately started on book 3 and it is even bigger than book 2! Need to pick up the reading pace!

Another great book from Erikson. I loved the plot in this and was totally invested in the characters the whole time.
Det tog verkligen musten ur mig att läsa Deadhouse Gates. I den andra delen i Malazan-serien så flyttas vi till en helt ny kontinent med helt nya karaktärer. All den möda som jag hade lagt på att sätta mig in i karaktärerna och världen (kontinenten) i första boken ledde inte till den större inlevelsen som en andra del brukar bjuda på. Snarare tvärt om. Att på nytt ta sig an utmaningen med att kastas in i händelsernas centrum på en ny kontinent(som för enkelhetens skull heter "The Seven Cities" - för det är ju inte alls förvirrande) var mentalt tyngre denna gången. Trots att jag slet i stort sett hela boken för att ta mig genom den så är betyget inte långt från en fyra. Det händer trots allt mycket episkt och slutet levererade återigen med råge.
Deadhouse Gates handlar i korthet om att urinvånarna på kontinenten Seven Cities gör revolt mot The Malazan Empire. En efter en faller städerna ur Malazans grepp och dessutom väcks en gammal argsint gud återigen till liv i öknen. Korta tankar om de olika perspektiven i boken:
Duiker/Coltaine
Utan tvekan min favoritdel. Coltaine är en av de högsta militära ledarna i The Malazan Empire på The Seven Cities när revolutionen drar igång. Han leder en enorm karavan med flyktingar mot den sista säkra hamnen på kontinenten. Jagad av enorma arméer får vi följa med på en desperat flykt genom öknen. Det bjuds på militära manövrar, spänning, tydlig berättarstruktur (thank god!), vidriga adelsmän och endel spännande vändningar. Duiker är en gammal historiker som gör sitt bästa för att dokumentera deras kamp för eftervärlden. Den här delen av boken var defintivt 5/5.
Kalam
Kalam är en av få återkommande ansikten från förra boken. Bara det höjde hans kapitel redan från start. Kalam är på jakt efter kejsarinnan av The Malazan Empire efter hennes svek. På sina ställen blixtrade det till, men jag hade nog förväntat mig lite mer av mästerlönnmördaren Kalams kapitel. Ibland känns lite för mycket som transportsträcka. Slutet levererade dock väldigt bra. 4/5
Fiddler/Crokus/Apsalar/Mappo/Icarum
Den här storylinen var på sina ställen i princip obegriplig. Hundratusentals år av historia presenterades, nya magisystem kom och försvann inom loppet av några sidor och det introducerades mängder med tillfälliga bikaraktärer. Den här delen kändes mest som en stor infodump för serien i stort. 2.5/5
Felisin
Bokens lågvattenmärke helt klart. Felisin var en ung adelsdam som gjorde sig ovän med fel personer vid fel tillfälle. Hon skickades till ett slavläger där hon tvingades utstå diverse hemskheter. Problemet är att Felisin helt enkelt verkar vara en dålig människa, både innan och efter hennes tid som slav. Hon beter sig allmänt oskönt mot allt och alla och visar aldrig den minsta tacksamhet. Hennes storyline leder mot något som skulle kunna bli en intressant clash, men jag har svårt att tro att jag kommer uppskatta att läsa om det om det kommer fortsätta vara ur Felisins synvinkel. Jag hade gärna sett att Felisins del av boken kortades ner till ett eller högst två kapitel. 1.5/5
Prognos för fortsatt läsande av serien:
Tro det eller ej men jag vill verkligen fortsätta ta mig genom Malazan. Det känns som en fantasyserie som ska läsas förr eller senare och jag är rädd att tappa för mycket om det blir ett stort uppehåll mellan böckerna. Kommande böcker är dock betydligt längre än dessa första två och det har jag inte riktigt i mig i nuläget tyvärr. Jag kommer nog försöka ge mig på trean i år åtminstone.
