Deadhouse Gates was slightly less enjoyable than Gardens of the Moon, but it continues with the grim atmosphere and introduces some really cool characters, as well as developing existing characters.
Some new characters introduced, that I really enjoyed (Coltaine, Icarium, Felisin, Pust, who reminds me of Kruppe).

Like Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates is the type of book that you have to invest a lot of time into. At around 300+ pages longer than the average fantasy book, I struggled with the length and at around 600 pages I started to wonder if Erikson even has an editor. I also struggled with connecting with any of the characters and was disappointed that most of the characters from the first book were not around. Despite my disappointment, it was only after I finished reading a book not by Steven Erikson that I realised how much I missed the ridiculously detailed style of writing, the infinitude of characters and perpetually feeling confused. I'll definitely move onto Memories of Ice, but at over 1000 pages I think I'll wait a little longer so I can truly savour the writing.

This was a vast improvement on Gardens of the Moon, I understand why some readers drop the series after the first book as you are thrown in at the deep end and it can be a struggle to read and keep track of all the information at times.
Deadhouse Gates is the book that has stayed in my mind the most from my previous read through, the world building is so rich and the characters introduced very compelling. My favourite POV was Duiker's and the whole Chain of Dogs storyline was outstandingly written with an emotional and tragic conclusion. I also love the friendship between Icarium and Mappo and the comic relief from Pust's insane monologues.
Overall everything just felt a lot more focused and better written than the previous volume.
