K.L Slater books all have the same air about them a bit slow to start and I never know where the will end up. Always entertaining in a very British way. Narration is always on point.

Mystery/thriller/ who done it... I didn't see the twist coming. It was interesting. I am not sure I would necessarily recommend, it but if it was on someone's tbr I would deter them from reading it either. I am not sure audio was the way to go with this one because of all the jumps back and forth in time, reading it might have been easier to follow along with and changed my overall view.

This book was very slow and at times even boring. Numerous times I considered not finishing it. But that is not in my nature and I'm glad because the last few chapters are what earned this book three stars instead of one. The twist is well crafted and even as it unfolds the reader is still hit with surprise after surprise.

It was good although I thought the ending was a little disappointing.

I listened to the audible audio book and the narrator was fab.

I generally dislike when I'm told (by the book cover, no less) that there is "a killer twist you'll never forget," but man did this deliver. I couldn't put the book down once I got to that moment (~80% in, mind you) when things change; I was hooked.

4 stars because some of the characters weren't developed enough for my liking. but damn this was a good one.

What if the person you love most in the world was in terrible danger … because of you?

Three years ago, Toni’s five-year-old daughter Evie disappeared after leaving school. The police have never been able to find her. There were no witnesses, no CCTV, no trace.

But Toni believes her daughter is alive. And as she begins to silently piece together her memories, the full story of the past begins to reveal itself, and a devastating truth.

Toni’s mind is trapped in a world of silence, her only chance to save herself is to manage the impossible. She must find a way to make herself heard. She must find her daughter.

This story is told from multiple POV's and is split into two parts. The first part of the story is more than half the book but it was the same old story - Husband dies tragically, wife has a meltdown and becomes reliant on pills. Their young daughter struggles with the move... sketchy neighbors and of course the strange behavior from seemingly all those around her that she completely ignores etc. etc. Nothing exciting there!! The main character, Toni, was thoroughly unlikable and comes across as selfish, irresponsible and an awful mother. But the whole locked-in syndrome story-line was an interesting way to go. But you have to wait until nearly 70% for the story to pick up and become interesting but unfortunately the ending was a bit of a let down for me too.

Having enjoyed the author's first book I hoped that this one wouldn't disappoint, it didn't!

The way the story is told is extremely well done. Due to the main female character being stuck inside herself we see everything from her point of view on flashback. I felt so much sympathy for the character due to what she apparently had gone through. But then the author turned it all on its head and had my head spinning. The way she does this was an OMG moment for me, and I actually spoke the words out loud in public I was so shocked.

A great second novel from the author and I can't wait to see what she brings next. Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy.

Review:
We're given a lot of information about the main characters in this book, so we get to learn a fair bit about Toni and little Evie, and their life together before Evie's disappearance. I really like it when authors give more background on characters as it makes me feel I know them a bit more, like friends, maybe; or neighbours. Perhaps this is why I felt so invested in Toni - I was rooting for her from the beginning. I got exasperated alongside her and anxious about her, as well as silently (I read quite a lot of this book in a public place!) willing her do/not do certain things! All the characters here are believable and very well written.

As with the author's previous book, Safe With Me, the narrative switches between the present time and a point in the past. In this book, however, I think it comes across almost seamlessly; much improved since the author's debut novel. The point in the past is the time of Evie's disappearance, upon which the tension builds and builds like a pressure cooker.

I was so shocked by the killer twist, which I definitely didn't see coming! To say any more would give the game away, but...wow! I found this book compelling in places would recommend it to fans of psychological thrillers.
Thanks to K. L. Slater, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for my honest review.
