This is an excellent historical fiction detective which pleasantly surprised me with it's quality. The ideosyncrasies of the time were well captured, and I enjoyed Maisie's coming of age element to the story, as well as de societal class descriptions and sociology involved in it.

I loved it! Maisie is a strong interesting female lead. For some reason I am obsessed with the period surrounding WW1, and the pathos and societal changes of this era. This book delivers in plot, character development as well as social setting. I can't wait to read the next one!

I give up. This is not for me. its going in the DNF. I did not complete the book, but I most definitely had time to form an opinion. I am almost halfway in, and there is no possible way I could care less about all these clichéd characters or Winspear's meticulously reported research. I just don't get it at all. If one more person says "Bob's yer uncle" or "A nod's as good as a wink!" I am going to lose it. It's as if the book is wholly populated by Dick van Dyke's character in Mary Poppins.
ETA: Someone just asked me if I had read the Maisie Dobbs books, and nearly 3 years after I wrote this I had a passionate and violent reaction. England should sue for libel for this one.

I really enjoyed the writing in this book, and how it could have been a formulaic mystery, but instead added so much more depth and emotional background to the story. I also enjoyed the characters and the time period, and although I might not get around to the rest of the series anytime soon, I know I would definitely like to at some point! It did get a bit explainy at the end, adding lots of words to what I already knew/had figured out, so it’s not quite five stars for me.

Lovely little mystery that was entertaining and comforting at the same time. Narrator for audio book was wonderful. I will continue with the series.
