Shut Up and Run

While this book does contain training plans and lots of helpful information for runners, I'd classify it as more a source of inspiration than straight up information--and that's not a bad thing. This is actually a perfect book for a beginning runner, because it's not overwhelming and features gorgeous photography of people running in NYC.*

I haven't tried the training plans, but they seem pretty solid based on my very limited knowledge. I like the no-nonsense style Robin writes in, and her story is pretty cool. This is a quick read, but again, that's not a bad thing. It's definitely a good book to pick up when you feel lacking in motivation!

*My caveat to that is that all the people pictured running are skinny and "fit", which could be off-putting to someone who is neither. I'm not that skinny and I'm not that fit, but it didn't bother me, partly because the runners are racially and gender diverse, which is a step above most fitness books that just have photos of trim white women.

As an ultramarathoner, I was pretty stoked to receive this book as a pre-release giveaway. When it showed up, I was pleased with the quality of the book, paper, and the pictures inside. But, then I started reading and it was downhill from there. Arzon couldn't seem to decide whether she was writing for a brand-new runner, a middle distance runner, or an ultra runner, so her advice was all over the place. Also, complaining about how awful you did in a marathon that is loads faster than the average person runs is seriously annoying. I think she wanted this book to be an everything to everyone running bible, but unfortunately the book suffered from having no real direction or focus because of that.

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads giveaways.

This was okay. Less about running as a sport and more like a stream of consciousness type pep talk. I like Robin and her story, so the personal anecdotes were fun. Quick read for a splash of motivation, but kind of all over the place in terms of flow.

Really more like 3.5, but I love Robin so I rounded up. I found this book really interesting as a way to learn more about Robin’s life and training history. However, as someone who’s been running for over a decade, I didn’t feel like I learned any new tips. That’s okay- still an enjoyable read.

Quick read. Had good info for all levels of runner. Would recommend.
informative

Definitely a good book to skim and get some good little sound bites to help motivate you to run. A little choppy but the photos are great! 3.5 rounded up.
