Really iconic of me to procrastinate reading books by reading different books.
Anyway, this was not my favorite Julia Quinn novel - though I really can't say which one is. I enjoyed the third book in the Bevelstoke series (Ten Things I Love About You), but this one fell a little flat. It was entirely due to the fact that the love interest, Nigel "Turner" Bevelstoke, was a terrible person. He was mean, condescending, and frustrating. I guess that was supposed to be part of his "charm," but it did not appeal to me at all.
I will say that I remain impressed by Julia Quinn's ability to continue creating incredibly unique characters and plotlines over and over. Although they all follow a relatively basic formula (this one deviated a bit from that formula), each character is distinct, and their stories are written so that they tie into each other but not to the point that you are forced to read them in order (thank God).

This book wasn't perfect, but seeing as I read it in a day, it brought tears to my eyes at least twice and I just couldn't put it down, I'd be hypocritical of me not to give it 5 stars.
Come for the regency-era diary entries, stay for the woman hitting a sexist bookshop owner with her purse
good book and then the last sentence is him implying he fell in love with her when she was 10 and he was 19? What was that about I’m scared
*3.5*
¡Qué placer volver a leer a Julia Quinn!

Julia Quinn has really been letting me down since I finished the Bridgerton series. While I liked the beginning of this book, the last half absolutely drove me up a wall. There have been a few male characters that I wasn't too fond of in a couple of her books, but Turner had to be one of the worst. I couldn't stand his behavior towards anybody. He is patronizing, condescending, and downright bullying to Miranda and then he gets physical with all the women who anger him, including his mother. Really?! I don't care what kind of sob story he has, there is no excuse for the things that he does, and this guy is so far from swoon worthy it's not even funny. Hopefully the next one is better.
Gah! Julia can do no wrong! I absolutely loved this one! I loved the characters and their personalities and attitudes. I loved the premise! I loved the tropes and the characterization. Miranda was sweet and smart and funny and stubborn, and Turner was smart and strong and damaged and sexy. Their first meeting was so sweet and wholesome on her part and funny on his. Seeing how this man of 19 talked to and treated his little sister's friend, who was sad and insecure, made me fall in love with his character. I did dislike him for a little while toward the end when he wouldn't tell her he loved her because his actions and thoughts so clearly showed that he did, but that was all part of his growth. Just as her coming to accept his proposal was part of hers.
I can't wait to read the next one!
