emotional funny lighthearted sad

Julia Quinn's book are my guilty pleasure and this wasn't any different. I enjoyed the character and their personalities and in this book the miscommunication aspect didn't bother me, but added to the story.
I do wish we could have seen a bit more of Mirandas views that we saw when she was declined by a bookshop worker about buying a book in a "men's" bookshop. She had a temperament that I related and I liked how Turner saw beneath that. I was a bit frustrated with the whole Turner not being able to say that he loves Miranda even tho I do understand the reasoning. The birth scene was done well and it was heartwarming to see Turner and his mom treat Miranda with so much love

At first, two Goodreads reviews in particular made me a bit apprehensive about this one, but I’ve remembered now - if you read reviews before you read the book, don’t let them colour your own judgement.

I mean... is this really a love story?

The love interest was truly deplorable. He knows that Miranda has adored him when she was a child. He attempts to force himself on her after his wife's funeral. He then absolutely takes advantage of her, knowing that she loves him and knowing that he doesn't love her.

Then after totally ignoring her for weeks on end, he badgers and threatens her despite her repeatedly telling him to leave her alone.

And this could have been such a nice story! A girl has loved a boy all alone, and he finally realises that she's the one... with the added trope bonus of him being her best friend's brother! Who wouldn't want to read that? But instead the relationship feels completely one-sided, with the love interest acting manipulative and cruel.

I thought Miranda was sweet, if not naïve, and I wanted her to have a better ending than this.
