Re-read
“Identity was partly heritage, partly upbringing, but mostly the choices you make in life.”
This novel directly follows the events of the novella [b:Alpha & Omega|5393637|Alpha & Omega (Alpha & Omega, #0.5)|Patricia Briggs|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1368147080l/5393637._SY75_.jpg|5461162] (a day and a half later), which you NEED to read first! It charts Anna’s experience in moving from Chicago to Bran’s pack and her relationship with Charles, but also more interestingly her growth from brutalised victim to taking her life back in her hands, and what it means to be an Omega wolf.
There is also a secondary thread, full of danger, which echoes the main one, especially on the importance of your choices.

Things I liked:
- Thoroughly entertaining! From start to finish, this totally had my attention.
- I really liked the magic system and the lore behind the wolves. The story was woven together really well with the different POVs.
- The romance felt like part of the story but the entire book didn’t rely on that part, which was a fun change.
Things I didn’t like:
- I felt like I was missing something in the beginning? It seemed to be alluding to a lot that happened off page and that took a second for me to catch up to.
i enjoyed this a lot, even though i’ve read the series in the wrong order. patricia briggs writes good werewolves and this introduces some really good backstory and information about the wolves, i also like the focus on charles because i thought he was an interesting character that we didn’t get to see much of in the mercy thompson series. sam’s characterisation in this is really bad though, he comes of as smug and unlike able sadly. but yeah it’s really good for a bit of bran’s backstory and development of his relationship with leah. i loved anna as well, i thought she was a really good main character and was very strong and managed a lot of trauma in a really well written way.

The world building is nothing very new, but the characters, especially Bran and Asil, and even Sage, who barely graced the pages but a force of character despite it, have drawn me to read more of the series. There's something to be said about beauty in tragedy, and seeing how characters, like Bran and Asil, who lost their greatest love, go on to live afterwards.
And don't get me wrong, the FMC is a character I am drawn to, for the survivor she is. But like many survivors of abuse, they dim their own light as self preservation, so it made sense we couldn't really see all of her. I'm looking forward to her growth in the rest of the series too.
I don't expect there to be as much exposition in the following books as well
