I really wanted to like this book, because I have been looking for lesbian zombie apocalypse books for years (luckily, there are more than just this one now, but still). Luckily, this book is just as good as it sounds. First of all, it’s hilarious. I kept reading out passages to my partner, but I’d only get another sentence in before I wanted to read out more. This is mostly because the main character, Devin, is sarcastic and funny herself.

The zombies appear pretty much from the first sentence, and Devin is already in a lesbian relationship from the beginning, so there’s pretty much no build up to getting to the meat of the story. The zombie action has some of its own mythology, and there is definitely enough gore for a zombie story. In fact, it gets pretty sickening, and Devin sustains a realistic amount of injuries for being a random, untrained person caught in a zombie apocalypse...

This was kind of a shitshow and it knew it. The first 2-3 chapters (half the book) were boring as hell as we kept getting flashbacks of Devin's lackluster relationship. Then the zombie stuff started getting interesting and Renni and Devin had some pretty good chemistry. Then it all went to hell again with Fury not making any sense at all (and being very well aware of that fact) and the explanation for the bite infection was the equivalent of 'it was all a dream'.

I appreciate that the book never took itself seriously at all, it was VERY aware of the cliche's and the convenient plot devices used. And obviously Michelle Rodriguez is hot like burning and a total badass so 'Renni' was a cool character. That's about all I liked, and the queer rep. The rest of it sucked.

this book is so much fun! i mean, what more could you want?
zombies, humour, lesbians, michelle rodriguez - sorry i mean, "renni ramirez" - fighting zombies and generally being badass ...

i laughed out loud often. although not exactly scary, it was definitely suspenseful. mostly this is just a fun, entertaining book!

maybe felt like it ended a bit soon, i thought for sure that there was going to be more to the story, but for a short novel it's excellent. it's well-paced and the characters are believable. they feel like people you might actually know.

hope she writes another soon.

This book was hilarious. The humor was raw and original. I feel like there were some plot aspects of the book that could've been expanded on. I could see this as part of a duology or something. To keep it as just a stand alone novella these plot aspects could've been removed. This should've taken the book down to a 3.5 star for the lacking craft aspects but the overall humor, characters and dialogue encouraged me to keep this at a 4 star read.

<spoilers>
As a zombie book I'm a big believer that the each zombie media must contain a change or original element to the zombie/apocalypse situation. In this novella's case most of the zombie's are not actually zombies but people who have some sort of psychological break that makes them think they're turning into zombies. This was a dark humour aspect to this traditional zombie story that had elements of realism to it.

Overall, this was a exciting and funny short story. It would be a perfect weekend or Friday night read.

Read the first chapter and gave up, because all the characters were incredibly obnoxious.
