Please Don't Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes by Phoebe Robinson

Some parts of this have been the alternatively hilarious and smart/earnest/incisive thoughts that I loved about Robinson’s previous collections. Other parts are just too meandering and rambly but in a way that loses my interest.

The essays that were good were great & will stick with me for a long time.

This was one I started reading for a book club at the store and couldn’t get it finished by book club, so I put it back in my stacks. Finally finished the last few essays today and gosh, @dopequeenpheebs is hilarious! 4⭐️
I do still sit on my bed in my outside clothes, but I definitely think about it more now before I do it.

So funny, sometimes a little hard to follow on audiobook bc of the windingness of the humor, but definitely a recommendable read

I thought the jokes and pop culture references made the storytelling more upbeat, but also could get distracting after multiple "all jokes aside" tangents. The writing is quintessentially standup humor, with quick quips or sassy remarks that made me laugh out loud (I still laugh thinking about "just pee, no need" when in a public restroom). Recommended reading for something lowkey but uplifting.

DNF. I love Phoebe Robinson but the writing was just way overstimulating for me. Maybe this would've worked better for me as an audiobook but I found the asides and tangents to be too much.

Some of her, as she might put it, #personalproblems like building an empire, having to fire employees, quarantining with the love of her life in a 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan that she owns, being best friends with U2, and traveling around the world 60+ times in a year are just not problems I can relate to and maybe didn't need to be put in a book.

I was drawn to this book as a very strict no-outside-clothes-in-the-bed adherent. I wasn't disappointed. She makes good points.

When Phoebe Robinson releases a new book, I already know I'll be listening to the audiobook because her narration adds all her own flair to the writing. This book covered a lot of timely and important topics, including relationships during quarantine, BLM, and Black hair discrimination. I really resonated with her essay on child-free adults and will probably go back to that one periodically when the outside pressure/judgment gets to be too much.

Of course, my one gripe is her joke tangents. This is prevalent in her other books as well, and at times I found myself thinking "Wrap it up and get back to the point." Other than that, this was a great listening experience.

There were several great essays in here that you should definitely check out:
- “Yes, I have free time because I don’t have kids”
-“Black Girl, Will Travel”
-“We Don’t Need Another White Savior”
- “Self-Care is Not a Candle and Therapy is Not a Notebook”

But overall I wasn’t really into this collection which typically happens with any sort of essay collection. I wasn’t completely engaged the whole time but I love how distinctive her voice is and I would be able to tell if I was reading an essay by Robinson. Definitely check out the essays above!
Love all the U2 and Bono stuff too lol
