This book could've been much more!
I think I tried reading this book years ago! Don’t remember what happened with that, though.
So, Nikki. I liked the book but I wouldn’t add it to my faves. Maybe it was because I listened to the audiobook so I didn’t feel anything for the characters.
Most of the time it was just:
Nikki goes somewhere.
Cole shows up demanding she join him.
She goes to another place.
He follows her again.
Maybe this is one of the books that a game of shots could be played to. Take a shot every time Cole shows up and threatens or tries to convince Nikki to follow him.
I LOVE MYTHOLOGY
Every time a myth or a mythical couple was mentioned I was like ..

Eurydice and Orpheus
Persephone and Hades
Ahhh also she was missing for so long and like … no one asks her where she went?!?
I liked the concept of the book. The Everliving idea. Wasn't all for this book to have such a strong romantic presence.
Every time we learn something interesting and different/ or Nikki goes somewhere/ or just generally exists, wherever Nikki is, there is Jack or Cole and they are like:

throughout the whole book.
I liked the characters just fine.
Wouldn’t be fangirling over any of them though, just yet.
Have hopes for the next book, this one was interesting enough.

I really don’t like the fact that Nikki is in this position cos she wanted to escape her feelings. It’s unrealistic. We face with shit every day and if each one of us tried to escape in such a way… tragic.Ahhh also she was missing for so long and like … no one asks her where she went?!?

Enjoyed the Persephone and Underworld premise. Felt like the author could have taken that a little bit farther, though. Also, couldn't help but feel like it was a version of the Twilight series with Everlivings instead of Vampires. Still enjoyed it, though, just not mind-blowing, and will likely finish the series.
Honestly, just more of the same teenage paranormal romance dreck. And I had high hopes for this one, being based on classic Greek mythology. But even that isn't immune from the paranormal romance curse.
The good thing about reading this was that I finally figured out why I have such a hard time reading teen paranormal romance. It's that the genre routinely forgets to include much "paranormal" in the story. Sure, we hear that the characters are vampires/werewolves/zombies/faeries/mutant squirrels from outer space, but most of the "action" is nothing more than typical teenage drama over what boy you like or what girl was mean to you or how bratty your little brother is and your parents don't understand you *sad trombone*. If there was some actual, I dunno, paranormal actiony-stuff going on (and not just "Ooh, that guy's so grim and dark and gritty and OMG nose ring! He must be some super-sexy nighttime werecreature, om nom nom"), I would enjoy this more. I want to see the paranormal going on, not just be told about it. I want to see the underworld and the sources of these myths in the story, not hear about it in a 12th Grade English Lit lecture. Maybe the action came later, but I didn't want to stick around the full six months that Nikki was determined to hold out for (also - it was disconcerting to have her be called both "Nik" and "Becks" - I couldn't keep track of who they were talking about half the time).

Sad to say I didn't love this book as much as I had hoped, considering just about every friend who ready it gave it 4 and 5 star reviews.
As usual with paranormal YA books, I loved the world the author created here - I was intrigued and wanted to know more about the Everneath, the Everlivings and their royalty I really liked the mythology angle, but I wish it was weaved in throughout the book instead of only touched on here and there. I didn't even realize this was such a big part of the story till toward the end.
My biggest problem was that I felt like I was reading a self-published book - characters were underdeveloped (I'm talking about you, Jules), timelines didn't match up (one day it's spring then suddenly it's Christmas), and little mistakes distracted me. And don't get me started on poor Tommy! He was apparently super important to Nikki, but she had like one or two conversations with him during her six month Return. And sometimes Nikki's inability to see the answers directly in front of her were frustrating
If a really good editor had gone through this book and cleaned it up, I think I would have liked it a lot more.

"Six months ago, Nikki vanished into an underworld known as the Everneath.
Now she's returned to her old life for another six months before the Everneath comes to claim her. Nikki longs to spend this precious time reconnecting with the people she left behind, her family, friends and most importantly her boyfriend Jack.
But there's just one problem. Cole, the smouldering immortal who enticed her to Everneath, has followed her home, hoping to take her back to the Everneath... This time for ever. "
A different kind of story. An adaption of the Greek mythology about Hades and Persephone and Orpheus and Eurydice.
And because there is more questions than answers about the hole story about Persephone and hades and the Everneath and the love and sacrifice. You have to read the other books in the serie.
This left me hanging and I need more answers.

An interesting take on the Persephone myth, this time with Nikki Beckett as the girl who gets sucked under and then returns. Not as good or as fully imagined a take on a myth as Laini Taylor's stories, but fun to read nonetheless. I do think some things were lost in translation in the audio performance; on the page, Nikki is kind of kick-ass / tomboyish, and I felt the narrator portrayed her as weaker than she's meant to be. I also found the "surface" life that Nikki left behind kind of boring-- Jack, her love interest, is a star quarterback, she's the nerdy girl who thinks he'd never go for her, blah blah blah. The love triangle aspect between Nikki, Cole (the Everliving who took her to hell in the first place), and Jack was necessary, given the myth, but still kind of annoying, with lots of male posturing I found kind of unbelievable. I mean, if you were a powerful immortal, you're probably not going to stoop to posturing with a 17 year old quarterback, right? You're going to think he's beneath you. Basically, all the main characters could have been more compelling and complicated, but the basic thrust of the story is interesting, and I liked the spin on the original myth.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH i always look at books, like everneath, and on the jellicoe road and finnikin of the rock, and i always put off reading them for some reason, but then i finish and I end up wondering why I never picked it up earlier, this book was amazing!
I did enjoy this book in the late 2000’s, 3OH!3, black and hot pink, and smudged eyeliner type of way. Maybe it was just the nostalgia, but it was fun! It was interesting! The idea of Nikki and Cole kept me going! Maybe I’m just a sucker for the “emo bad boy rockstar” vibes but I don’t care! I love it!
