Pretty good! I had to chose it for a school book and I ended up liking it a lot!

The book was drawn out and wildly uninteresting. Had to read it for school, and it pained me to read it. 0 out of 5.

I had to read this for school and had no expectations going into this book, only because I have read a book by this author before and was not a fan. I do enjoy reading about this time period. The thing is that some of the characters just did not seem very real. Josh fell in love, what, twice in this book? The only thoughts I saw come from Josh is that "She's funny," and "she's pretty." It seemed like he never really fell in love. I totally ship Josh+Janey though.

So the story was pretty good, but it was very hard to get into it and relate to the characters. It was well written though. I don't think I would recommend this for a read, but I wasn't disappointed in the end.

One of the reviews I read here on goodreads stated that the characters weren't "three dimensional" and that Josh's love interests were ridiculous. I say to her, well, duh. The boy is 15. The MC's are 10 and 15, they aren't fully fleshed characters because they aren't fully fleshed humans. Josh's love interests are a tribute to his age, as is his struggle to both be his own man and his parents' son.

This is a wonderful story that allows today's teenagers to connect with a time they are likely 3 generations removed from. I can see why my niece is reading it in school. She can relate to these boys, their will to be on their own, their need to follow their own passions and interests at any cost, being misunderstood and feeling under valued with parents.

Great insight into the Great Depression from the eyes of a youth. I am always intrigued by stories that involve difficult father/son relationships. Josh has to discover that many of the same qualities he despises in his father are also qualities he carries within himself. He takes a journey across the country, but really discovers a journey of maturity and sacrifice.

An underrated read about a boy having to grow up - quickly - during the Great Depression; I read this in 7th grade and loved it. Perhaps it was simply the time period, but I enjoyed it more than Hunt's more famed novel "Aprils" (for design failures, even for then, check out the first edition cover). (8.5)
