Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This one was fun and had great illustrations. My new reader and I took turns reading the pages and he enjoyed Fox’s adventures in the deep. The content was well thought out and made for an educational read as well. Thinking we will definitely add this to our bookshelf.

Constellation of the Deep, by Benjamin Flouw is a lovely picture book about Fox, who wants to explore the ocean, and Wolf, his cousin, who supports him. Fox is on the hunt for a glowing plant at the bottom of the ocean. Along the way, he meets several animals, rescues a new friend, and takes some wonderful photos.

This book is beautifully illustrated, in a style that makes you want to look more carefully at each page. There are labeled illustrations of various pieces of equipment, sea creatures, and plants that are sure to be fun for any young ocean explorer. The text is a little stilted, though whether that is the fault of the translation it is difficult to say.

A lovely addition to the library of any young reader, particularly those who love the smell of salt air.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the ARC!

Constellation of the Deep is a beautiful marine tale that pairs exquisite illustrations with a clear, effective text that will delight and inform young readers. The art is the best part, showcasing an angular style that's particularly effective, especially in the more expansive images that highlight the vastness of the sea or sky. The text is whimsical but educational, with details like types of coral and names of sea algae. All in all, it's a beautiful picture book that should delight young readers with an interest in sea life.

Thank you to NetGalley and Tundra Books for the advance review copy!

Really nice art in this one. Colorful and attention grabbing. I love how the foxes have such human-look to them just such a nice, subtle touch of anthropomorphism. Also, this story is a great mixture of fiction and nonfiction. We have the story for the fox searching for the Constellation of the Deep (fiction). And how fun is it to imagine a fox scuba diving. So cool. Then we have the images of plant life and scuba equipment, etc clearly defined (nonfiction). This would be an excellent read aloud for bedtime stories of librarians looking for ocean-themed story time titles.

The story here is about Fox, who goes for a walk along the beach with his cousin, Wolf. Along the way, a seagull overhears their conversation about plant life (a passion of Fox's), and asks if they've heard of the constellation of the deep, an elusive luminescent underwater plant. Fox is excited to try and find it, and gets his scuba gear and equipment to go try to find it, while Wolf stays behind to look at the various creatures found on the shore. In each case, a visual and text list of the gear and the creatures is given, but no other information is provided. As Fox dives through the underwater world, we get another list of plant life, with only names, no pronunciation guide or descriptions listed. At one point he loses his camera and helps a whale caught in a net, finding his camera stuck in the net with various pieces of trash. The whale helps him return to the beach, but he's sad that he never found the plant. While Wolf is reviewing the photos Fox took, he finds a picture Fox didn't take that turns out to be the plant Fox was searching for, apparently taken when the camera hit the ocean floor.
The art in this book is really gorgeous, with lush scenery and vibrant colors, I loved that part of the book. The story was good, though the ending was a bit abrupt, and it would have been nice to have either a glossary at the back, or explanations included within the illustrations of the different things listed, especially pronunciation on some of the harder words. This would've increased the educational aspect of the book, and added more interest to the story. I would still recommend it, but it will require some further reading to learn about the things listed.

Almost narrative nonfiction, but not quite. More of a deeply chill story of two nature-loving friends, Fox and Wolf. Fox goes scuba diving, trying to find a glowing plant. Along the way he encounters many different plants and animals, and the reader learns about scuba equipment, tide creatures, algae, and coral. There's just a touch of a conservation vibe, but the overwhelming theme is wonder and respect for the natural world.

The only thing that could have put it over the top for me would be a few pages of backmatter. But otherwise this was just the chilliest kind of cool.

A fox that goes scuba diving? Beautiful illustrations of the wonders of the ocean? Constellation of the Deep by Benjamin Flouw was such a fun and enchanting read. Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for the gifted copy of the book.

Fox and his cousin, Wolf, are on a walk when they run into a seagull who lets them know about an amazing plant called the constellation of the deep. It is said that it grows on the bottom of the ocean and that it glows in the dark. Intrigued by this, Fox heads down into the ocean in search of this plant and discovers many amazing plants along the way. Will he be able to find the constellation of the deep?

I really enjoyed the story and the illustrations in Constellation of the Deep. While it is a fictional story, there are also non-fiction elements as the story also itemizes the things Fox needs for his adventure, the different types of coral and seaweed - making it more informative and fun at the same time. This is a wonderful read that young readers will enjoy and perhaps even be inspired to learn more about the wonders of the ocean.
