3.5 stars, rounding up to 4! Actually during the first half of the book, I thought I’d be giving this 5 stars because it was so interesting and layered. But slowly throughout the rest of the book, I found myself ticking off pieces of stars due to other issues like confusing character motivations, changing alliances, and obvious deux ex machina. I wonder if the second half of the book would have benefitted from being split into another book, with more time to flesh out details around the Alaki, goddesses, monsters, origins, and all the various tribes too.

This started off really strong but unfortunately it petered out by the end. However, I loved the camaraderie among the women and I understood what the author was trying to portray with her themes of misogyny.
slow-paced

deka my sweet child i’m so proud of you and everything you’ve accomplished.

well written, clues to the story are given out in a way that keeps you engaged on where things are going. memorable characters and i really enjoyed the, for lack of a better term, magic system. excited to see where the story goes from here!

I struggled a little bit with this book in the beginning.I wanted it to be more fast paced and also I wasn't in the mood for this kind of violence but around the half way point, I really liked it more. I think the part with the boys in general and the relationship wasn't the main focus. I was really going to say that they didn't need to exist but by the end, I found it refreshing how the author wrote that.

Side note: I was so mad at her village in the beginning. Pure girls do this do that, it really grated on my nerves.

Loved the plot and the setting
Characters were simple but enjoyable
Social commentary was a bit too prominent, but understandable for a YA

Amazing debut novel from Namina Forna! This book was filled with amazing characters and relationships. This book shows the true bond between female friendships which was such a wonderful part of the novel. Throughout the book, there we many unexpected plot twists and moments that had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know more about what was going to happen. The ending satisfied and helps the reader look forward to the continuation of Deka's story!
