It would probably have helped to have read 2-4 in this series. Oh well.

Even if I'd read the intervening installments, after reading 1 and 5 I think it's safe to say that this series just isn't for me. I appreciate all of the literary references and I like the idea of the BookWorld, but I found both books alternately tedious and irritating.

It's been a long time since the last Thursday Next book. Something Rotten was published waaaay back in 2004, and Fforde apparently put Thursday on hold while he published the two Nursery Crime books (The Big Over Easy and The Fourth Bear).
The story begins on Thursday's birthday. Although she dislikes celebrating her birthday, her husband Landen Parke-Laine has a gift for her before she leaves for her job at Acme Carpets, which is really a front for her old SpecOps department.
Landen is unaware that SpecOps hasn't really been disbanded, and the very complex plot of the book centres around what Thursday really does while Landen thinks she's installing carpets.
This is vintage Thursday Next. I've missed her and I'm happy she's back.

Time travel. An intense smattering of classic literature and characters. Ghosts. Time travel. In-depth comparisons of various cheeses. Clones. Time travel.
I think that covers it! Jasper Fforde's wit and imagination remain unparalleled.

I was disappointed in this book - it wasn't as funny or witty as the other Thursday Next books, it seemed really forced, and it really ventured more into the world of science fiction and time travel. The other books don't take themselves seriously - this one seemed to be on the verge...The series was wrapped up so neatly, but this one left off wide open for another one.
It's somewhat fitting that I took such a long break from reading the Thursday Next series, it's been 4 years since I read the first 4 novels and book 5 picks up 14 years later. I was delighted to see how quickly these characters and world building came back to me, Thursday is a dry, witty delight of a character who is easily one of my favourite fictional characters to read.
It's reignited my love for this series and I'll definitely be catching up on the series.

I'm reading this entire series straight through for the first time, and there is definitely a drop after Something Rotten. I still adore this series and the characters, and consider this in my top 5 re-reads, but this book isn't as strong as the first four.
Just when you thought this series couldn't get any weirder... it does. XD
I'm gutted to have not enjoyed another Next. I say "not enjoyed" because I didn't dislike it. It remains a fascinating world and in theory I should have loved it. As with previous instalments, Fforde's obsession (smugness?) with his world completely overshadows all plot and character development. Sadly, while he has an incredible imagination, he simply can't write for toffee.
