"Most Guys Aren't Human"
Original review posted at JC's Book Haven and given 4.5 stars.
This story is a stand-alone in the Lux Series stories and is adult rather than YA. I admit the covers on The Lux Series have always been pretty hot, but this one blows them out of the water. You can tell immediately that it's more adult just by looking at the two of them, and I was mighty intrigued to see if we could get a character like Daemon that I didn't feel like an old lady for swooning over. You don't see muscles like that on a teenager.
The Good
When I started reading The Lux Series, I didn't know how much I was going to get into a story about aliens, especially if one of them was supposed to be swoon-worthy, but Armentrout has really created a complex and lovable world here. In Obsession, Hunter is an Arum, which is the enemy to the Luxen. My favorite cocky, crush-able alien, Daemon, just happens to be a Luxen, so this unique look into the mind of the other side is worth the read in and of itself. The rose-colored glasses are off, I got a look through his eyes at how most Luxen truly are (as well as Arum). After reading this one, there is no black and white. It's a lot of shades of grey.
Obsession switches POV between Hunter and Serena who is a human. Hunter is a "bad" guy. He is the epitome of hot bad boys everywhere. He's bossy, arrogant, strong, prone to breaking rules, and he likes beautiful women. He's given an assignment that he's very unhappy about and the pages proceed to smoke a little around the edges from there. If you thought the laptop scene was great, just wait until you read the study scene. Armentrout is such an excellent writer, the snark and chemistry just flowed the whole time I read.
It was nice to see a couple of cameos and not only that but this one really sets the stage for Origin. The central plot of this book aligns so well in the world that I gleaned a few tidbits about what will come in the future for Daemon and Katy as well.
The Bad
The only little thing of mention is that there were times that Serena said something that sounded just like something that Kat would say. I think it would be pretty hard to keep anything like that from happening though when it's the same author's voice supplying the dialogue and the characters have similar personalities.
The Romance
This is just my kind of romance. Hunter and Serena really don't want to have anything to do with each other, but you cannot deny the chemistry. They get an A+ in that class! Everything builds naturally and the romance and hesitancy all feels real. I really like these two together on the same page.
Conclusion
You don't have to read any of the previous Lux books to enjoy this story about Hunter and Serena, but my humble opinion is why on Earth would you skip such a great series? The writing is fun, easy to read through in one-sitting, and includes repetitive use of one of my favorite words: ninja. The characters are so easy to love and the romance is rocking that house. The story-line and action are intense at times and I got to see a recognized face a time or two. I wouldn't miss this one at all if you are a Lux fan or if you enjoy Paranormal Romance!

""I wasn't fighting to feed or to work off aggression. I wasn't fighting because I was told or was obligated. I was fighting for Serena. She meant everything to me. Knowing that, fully understanding what that meant, I was on a motherfucking warpath"
And after this statement, he spends ten pages killing everyone.
It's moments like this in a book that makes the book worth reading.
Was a good read though.

I was so excited to read this book as it's in the Lux World, and everyone knows I am absolutely in love with the Lux Series and that whole world. Except this was is set in the "adult" world instead of the YA. I wanted to give the book more stars, but I just couldn't. It was okay...it didn't blow me away the way I hoped it would. Hunter is a very arrogant SOB, I'll give you that. And I usually like that kind of guy in books....but for some reason, I was not all that impressed. Don't get me wrong, I like Hunter, but he just seems like a knockoff Daemon. I also didn't find believable how quickly he fell in love with Serena as cold, blunt and calculating he was, I found it hard to believe he would magically change in a couple weeks. Sorry. Overall it was a good read, but I was really expecting more. I will say when Daemon made his short cameo, I squee'd like crazy! lol

Seriously though. I have an OBSESSION with Armentrout's writing. See what I did there? (;
Okay seriously though with all of Armentrout's books, I have a strong feeling this is going to be an Armentrout month. PJ can wait until December.
POST READING:
I don't know. Uhm, I feel cheated. Adult spin-off indeed. More of a sex book rather than anything else. Oh and it pissed me off when there were tiny spoilers here and there for Opal and Origin. I'm in the middle of Opal, and I now know that Katy was taken. Nice. Real nice.
And I love Hunter and Serena and all, but...Daemon and Katy are just better xD

So, this book was definitely a tad bit on the raunchy side…if it were a fanfiction it would be a PWP. lol. seriously though, the majority of the ‘plot’ took place in a house…the rest of the novel consisted of these two lovely people getting it in.
The events of this book takes place along the timeline of Opal, when the main female protagonist in that novel was kidnapped for the first time…
i think the intention of this book was the show the readers of the Luxe novels, that the Luxe’s arch enemy, the Arum, aren’t all that bad…but considering Hunter (the male protagnist and lead Arum in this novel) had a hard on for 93% of the book, almost killed Serena (female protag) twice and had to resist killing her…or screwing her throughout the entire novel…i’m going to say my opinions on the Arum are pretty much the same as they were before i read this book…
[spoilers]
on the other hand….we do get a glimpse of a different side of the Luxe race…they aren’t the beautiful, perfect rainbows they’re painted as in the Luxe novels. I don’t know if it’s because Daimon, Dawson and Dee are low key, and try to keep to themselves as much as possible…or simply because they aren’t important enough…but they’re kind has some really bad intentions for our beautiful Earth here and i’m going to need them to pull their heads out of their asses for a few moments and figure out a game plan here!
…..i don’t know if it was this book…or the effect of many books with this kind of outline, (where girl meets boy who is weird or isn’t human, girl and boy fall in love, girl forgets everything about her past life, and only focuses on her relationship with boy) but i’m getting so sick of reading books where the girl just completely forgets that she had a life prior to meeting some hot, exotic guy, she shouldn’t even be talking to.
Serena was a psychologist/guidance counselor when the story started, and when the book ended, she was Hunters property. (not really…but he did refer to her as ‘mine’ numerous times) — i would like for there to be a story that can have the romance, and ever lasting love between two people…but cant said two people, PLEASE keep some essence of who they were before they met their ‘other half?’ is that too much to ask for?! i don’t think so.
anyway….besides that. this was a pretty good book….pretty short considering but. good nonetheless.

I am pretty sure if I read this befora the lux series I would've liked it more. I just keep comparing the books and the relationships and I was not used to J.Lynn's New adult style . I also was confused most of the time because I couldn't know who was talking . But this was an amazing way to see the world from the "bad guys" POV and to understand them better .
okay I officially love Hunter way more now, although there are some etch-a-sketch scenes in this book that I didn't really agree with and were quite disappointed that a female author wrote them, I still loved this book a lot. Also I didn't realize this was Adult and not YA so yeah those sex scenes really threw me out the loop so yeah keep an eye out for that. But I am disappointed I don't get to see their lives after book 5 of the Lux series, I really want to know what ended up happening to them!!
