This is a grown-up spin off of the author's YA Lux series. It had the intriguing Luxen Arum storyline with a more grown-up content. I found Hunter enjoyable and liked getting the Arum side of the story. If you like the Lux series but are craving something more adult....this is perfect!
I really loved this book. Jennifer L Armentrout has me hooked and I love the lux universe. It was great reading more about the arum and learning more about them.

What can I tell you about Obsession?
An Arum. Yes. You read that right.
Obsession does take place in the same world that Katy and Daemon inhabit,
Obsession is more mature, definitely targeted toward the older crowd. It's an adult romance, so you know what that means.
Obsession will change what you think you know about the Luxens and Arums.
There will be some crossover with certain characters from the Lux Series.
Obsession takes place in-between Opal and the 4th Lux novel, which is called Origin.
Hunter and Serena are the lead characters in Obsession.

“You don’t look very apologetic.”
I frowned. “Well, I am. Things are kind of… messed up. And you knocked me out. And you’re half naked—”
“Have you looked in the mirror?” he cut in. “You’re just as naked as I am. And I didn’t throw anything at your head.”
Glancing down at myself, I cringed. Somehow I’d forgotten that I was in my shirt and undies. Flushing all over again, I wanted to dart behind something, but I folded my arms. “I didn’t throw anything at your head. I was—”
“Do you always overreact like this?”
Oh my God, if he interrupted me one more time I was going to throw something at his head. “I woke up in a strange place, kidnapped by an alien. I can’t even believe I’m explaining why I overreacted. What were you doing in my room anyway?”
He mimicked my stance. “Correction: this is my house and therefore this is my room. Not that I need to explain myself, I was checking to make sure everything was secure outside.”
“But you did kidnap me.”
“I did not.”
I threw up my hands. “What’s all this? Where am I?”
“West Virginia.”
My mouth dropped open. Oh, my God, this couldn’t be happening. “I’m in a different time zone? Are you fuc—”
Hunter threw up his hand, silencing me. The tip of my tongue literally burned to lay into him. “What the hell is that noise?”
Before I could respond, he stalked past the bed and entered the bathroom.
“Jesus! What are you trying to do in here?” His voice carried from the bathroom. “Giving the floor a bath?” he demanded.
I searched desperately for my jeans, but came up empty.
Hunter returned, hands on his hips. Too late. “Seriously?”
“I forgot I turned the faucet on. Geez, you’re grumpy.”
“And you’re already turning out to be a huge pain in my thigh.”
“Look, I’m really sorry about that. Okay? I’ve been through some really traumatic events here recently and yes, I might have overreacted.” I struggled with my patience. “And I really would just like to know where my pants are.”
“Your pants were folded on the corner of the bed. You probably knocked them on the floor.”
What? I wanted to check, but I so wasn’t bending down in my panties in front of him. “And how did they get off me and folded on the bed?”
“I did it. Thought you’d be more comfortable.”
Oh geez, I had no idea what to think about that. A thank you so wasn’t in order though. He did undress me while I was unconsciousness for crying out loud. My entire body felt red-hot. “I’m not going to say thank you for that.”
“Not like I’d expect that common courtesy from you,” he replied, his pale eyes dancing… with what? Anger? Amusement? “After all you never thanked me for saving your ass—a pretty ass at that. So I can add inconsiderate to your glowing list of attributes. Put that right next to: overreacts, acts first and then thinks, drama—”
“Oh, go fuc–”
“You do not want to finish that sentence,” Hunter warned. His voice low enough to send warning shivers down my spine.

Obsession
I like Hunter he is very honest and when he figures out what he truly wants he fights for her! He is not willing to accept defeat when it comes to Serena.

Loved reading a perspective from the Arum and seeing they can be just as human and loving as the Luxen. JLA does it again with this steamy adventure and I couldn’t put it down!
Obsession is the much needed spicy breath of fresh air from the dark side of the Lux universe. Man, who knew I would love the “bad” guy so much (oh wait, it’s me, I knew). This book brings in a new point of view by providing the perspective of an Arum, the alien species that was created to be the only natural predator of the Luxen.
While reading the Lux series before reading this book is not required, I strongly recommend it. It provides the world building you need to truly understand the universe (which makes this book feel like a wonderful return visit) AND it supplements parts of the Lux timeline. I think we can all agree that Hunter deserved this novel after his appearance(s) in the series. I personally loved how this stand-alone fit like a missing puzzle piece into the events of Lux.
While I loved the original series and have read it through several times, when I say Obsession is the much needed spicy breath of fresh air. Oooooffff

3.5 Stars.
I am not sure what is so "hawt, hawt, hawt" about this book, but it was a good read, just not that sexy to me.
This book introduces us to Serena Cross, who was trying to comfort her best friend Mel, who believed she just saw aliens. Serena played the dutiful friend, listening to her bestie, who sounded drunk and a little insane. Of course, we quickly find out that Serena is NOT insane and there are people from the Department of Defense who don't want her spreading her story around. They send an Arum named Hunter to seduce Serena and find out exactly what she knows, what evidence she has and who she has talked to. That is how Hunter came to insinuate himself in Serena's life.
As Hunter got to know Serena, his attraction to her started blurring his objectives and he got involved with her. Could Hunter do what the DOD required of him or had Serena come to mean more?
If you have read the Lux series, then this is more of the same. The only real difference is that heroine was less whiny and annoying and the hero was less of a douchbag.
Also, everything about the Arum and Luxen are flipped here, so the Luxen are the ones with a superiority complex and don't care about humans and are evil. Arum are more of stop gap measure to keep checks and balances. Arum only really hurt Luxen, their mortal enemy.
someone helped me to overcome my initial balking at the "flipped script" by saying the author wanted to convey that there are good and bad in every race, alien or human. So Luxen and Arum and Human are neither all good nor all bad.
The story was writing in alternating 1st person POV with Serena, then with Hunter. I don't know if I really cared for that, though it wasn't as distracting as I thought it would be. I see that the author is trying to blend this story with the Lux series because she had a couple of characters from that series appear in this book. I guess we will see where she is going with it.

*winces*
I'm a JLA fan, make no mistake of that, but this one... *winces some more*
There are so many things that I have a problem with, so I just going to discuss it under cut so I don't spoil it for everyone:
1. The use of 'vagina' as an insult
2. The nearly-rape scene, and the fact that it is not dealt with properly
3. The fact that this book is almost entirely about sexual attraction between Hunter and Serena
4. The fact that Hunter is an unapologetic perv
5. Serena's best friend freaking DIED, and apart from casual reminiscing here and there there is lack of grief...? Serena's more distracted with Hunter. Idk, I find it disturbing.
JLA writes pretty hot scenes, I give you that, but it doesn't lessen the fact that some of them are creepy. Like the bit where Hunter touches Serena when she's sleeping? That's pretty alarming, no matter how hot that scene is. It doesn't sit well with me.
And I also have issues with how Hunter is perpetually giving out creepy Edward Cullen vibes (feeding? watching Serena sleep? yikes personal space, man), and the fact that stripped down, he really is just a horny git. It's not just that he's an ass...I dunno, I just don't like this guy. 10/10 would whack with a shoe if found anywhere near me no matter how hot this guy is (won't say it's going to be a successful whack--he has Arum reflexes after all)
One thing I like is how distinctive the character voices are. I can tell the difference between Hunter's POV and Serena's, so kudos to JLA for that.
Other than that, it's a disappointing read for me.

I love Jennifer's books, so I rounded this up to 4 stars, but really I would give it a 3.5/5.
Let's start with the positives. Like all of JLA's books, it was very well written and so easy to read. The characters are well-developed and you really end up rooting for them. There was romance, action, mystery, and bad-ass protagonists. I enjoyed reading from both Hunter's and Serena's POV, and their story was very cute.
Now onto the negatives. Unfortunately, this book followed the typical bad boy falls for good girl story line. Usually, I'm a sucker for enemies-to-romance books, and if there's brooding, dark-haired, snarky, bad boy in the picture, even better. However, this just felt exactly like reading the Lux series. This is, of course, a spin-off of the Lux series, however I was expecting there to be some original characters and personalities. I absolutely loved Lux, but with this book, you could literally swap out Hunter and Serena for Daemon and Kat. The dialogue, personality and dynamic between the two was pretty much exactly the same - it was entertaining, but just repetitive. It was basically just an adult version of Lux. There's nothing wrong with that of course, and Jennifer has basically said that was the point of the book, so if that's what you're after then you'll love this book.
Even though technically you could read this book without having read the Lux series first, I would highly recommend reading Lux first. Not only because it's an amazing series, but also because it explains so much more about what's going on, and why the bad guys are so nefarious. Some familiar faces also do make an appearance, which was great and made the book more enjoyable.
Overall, this was fun read, just a little predictable.
