Wow. Just...wow.

Changes is right. I'd also have accepted "Shit Gets Real" as the title of this latest book in Butcher's Dresden Files series.

Harry Dresden's life has never been an easy one, but Butcher really pours on the hurt here--so much so that I had to check the cover and make sure Changes hadn't actually been written by Joss Whedon. I haven't responded so viscerally to fictional events since Order of the Phoenix.

The worst part about Changes? Waiting a year to find out what happens next.

So much happens in this book! Once it gets going it's fun to read the non-stop action. I don't know how it all fit into one book in a coherent way. My favorite character in this book is Lea, can't wait to see more from her. Sanya was a close second. For gems like this:
Spoiler"So," he said. "Mab."I grunted vaguely in reply. "You hit that," Sanya said."
maybe it's knowing he's Russian that makes his dialog so good? Whatever the reason I love the agnostic Knight of the Cross.
But as usual Jim Butcher writes women as if they're hormonal middle schoolers. Susan sizes up Molly? Why? Proximity to Harry? I've never once done that as an adult. Susan isn't the kind of insecure that acting that way requires.
I really wish he'd give the "I protect women, guess I'm not like other dudes" thing a rest. Protecting other people is a thing people do.

I've put together a list of Dresden-verse stories in reading order including short stories , graphic novels, and online micro-fiction. I've opened it up for public view with this link.

I have liked the Dresden books so far, but I LOVED this one, and the nimble way in which seemingly random plot points all came together. The last 5 minutes had my heart pounding. And Butcher only used the word "shambled" eleventy billion times as opposed to the usual twelve.

Wow, look at that. I actually read a book pretty quickly! This might be the earliest a Dresden book has hooked me. Normally, it feels like I slog through the first half of the book to get to the good stuff at the last half. Though the beginning of this was really awkward and really made me realize how the books are written for someone picking up the books randomly (stupid), this book had A TON of changes in it. I'm not certain how it's all going to pan out. I was uncertain what book I'd read next but I guess I'm reading more of Dresden Files.

Damn Jim Butcher. This book starts off like a gunshot and doesn't slow down until you've run out of words. It was an interesting change of pace from others in the series - usually it's a slower start, with a mystery, but Changes was much faster paced (leading to a greater sense of immediate danger and terror). It's not for the feint of heart, but it's pretty clearly a turning point in the series. If you're a Dresden Files fan, this one is a necessity.

This is certainly one of the books where Butcher goes big with the climactic scene, and then throws a punch with the finale. The uncomfortable comments are at a minimum, although there were moments in the book where I did find myself wondering "why even bother describing characters like that?" Such is life in this series, though.

Changes certainly has its ups and downs, but is overall a fun and very engaging story. Add in the way Butcher sticks the landing on this one, and you've got a solid entry into the series!

I gave this book a higher score just for the ending.. didn't expect it lol.. the plot is interesting, started very strong and there are more consequences in this one, definitely one of the best books in the series yet.
