This was tough. I've been a minimalist for over 5 years and have been following the stories of Joshua Fields-Milburn and Ryan Nicodemus for a long time. A large part of the book focused on their early lives and their journey into minimalism - something I was already very familiar with. I listened to the audiobook version so while this book in particular had exercises (which I didn't realized when I purchased) I did not complete the exercises. As mentioned before, I'm not new to the journey so for me, it wasn't enlightening. Perhaps if you are new to minimalism or two Ryan and Josh, this book might be more beneficial.

It was ok, but not about minimalism, really. The five keys to living a meaningful life (health, relationships, passion, growth, and contribution) is an interesting way to examine your own.

Too little of actual minimalism.
And pretentious tone.

This book was featured on Blinkist. And based on my previous (pleasant) encounter with Blinkist, I was hoping to be enlightened once again. Unfortunately, no such luck. Listening to the summary of this book rubs me the wrong way. This so-called “minimalist-way-of-living-a-meaningful-life” is nothing more than two “successful” airheads stating the obvious and telling you how to live YOUR life. Who doesn’t know debt is bad? Who doesn’t want to pay off their mortgage/student loan/whatever debt they have got on their shoulders and live happily ever after? But reality is a bitch. And more often than not, people DO need to do what they don’t like to make a living. It sucks, I know. But not everyone is fortunate enough to have what they wish for- dream jobs, houses, have it all.

This book expands upon the 5 Core Values that the Minimalists hold:

Health
Relationships
Passions
Growth
Contribution

They make the claim that you need to have all of these things working in tandem in order to have a meaningful life. It honestly reminds me of The Princess Bride when the count says “if you haven’t got your health you haven’t got anything” 😂. But aspects of this are true, you need to make sure you are contributing to others, attempting to work on your own personal growth, making time for your passions, carving out time for the people closest to you, and working on your health. If all of these can come together then I think life can be better for people than they could imagine.
