This was a great book! I fully teared up at the end when Schuyler shared about his halmoni; it was so sweet.

I think I do have minor divergences (?) with him on some verbiage or the way certain things were presented for dating, or introducing yourself with pronouns. I think there could be some more nuance there — as he mentions, cis people can give pronouns but if you’re figuring it out that’s okay and you can hold that, but it’s something where I think in theory that’s great and inclusive, in application forces people figuring things out into an uncomfortable territory. But this book is also an informative one and I think having qualifiers for each and every single thing could detract from the purpose of this book.

He writes really well and I appreciated a lot of this book, especially the feedback section. It was something I’ve never considered before and it was a really interesting read.

This book is about being an ally to the trans community and the individuals within the community, however I think its ideas and principles can be applied on a broader spectrum.

Just a few things I learned:
-Curiosity does not mean you deserve an answer
-what is intersectionality
-what are micro aggressions

I think this book is important for anybody that has a trans person in their life. This is a very essential book. It has everything that you could ever want to know and ask questions about and what to say and what not to say. It’s definitely an introductory book for somebody who has not had a lot of experience with trans and non-binary people. I definitely learned a lot about micro aggressions, and what to say and what not to say. I found the information very helpful in terms of, what to say back to somebody who is also making these mistakes and micro aggressions and possibly being trans phobic. It’s definitely worth a read.

Identities are complex and it takes time to understand because so many people experience the same world so differently. It is not quick or easy and we are all going to make mistakes. I don't think I will ever stop having more to learn because humans are always evolving. I am ready and willing to keep learning and growing.

This book was a helpful resource to educate myself and to learn more about someone else's lived experiences that are different than my own. Schuyler really tries to advocate for a whole community, but he is one person with his own perspectives and this book also represents a snapshot in time. However, I found that even though we have different identities and experiences, I could relate to some things he said. We're human and we deserve safety and care. I think that sentiment is timeless.

This particular book was written for people who are not trans, looking to better understand people who are.
There are other books to read if you want to read about other people's experiences and you can find a lot of them on the list of commonly
challenged/banned books.
