Beautiful, one-of-a-kind exploration of a woman's family.

Fascinating book, raising very interesting and relevant questions, way beyond just looking at German history, but that we all have to contend with: what does national identity mean? How do we live with the choices and guilt of some of our ancestors' choices? What does it mean for our own guilt & shame?
I loved it! Also wonderful in documenting those tiny fragments of history that don't make it in the classrooms but are deeply human.

What a beautiful & sad book.

I adore the artistic style that Krug used to tell her story - handwritten text, collaged photographs, old papers and new drawings help tell us about her families' lives in Germany during WWII. The images help the sad history become a little more palatable, making Nazi Germany only slightly less disturbing as Krug, and the reader, try to figure out just which side the family fell on in this dark time in history.

Considering our current political climate here in the US, this book is a must read. Imagine your grandchildren looking back at your life hoping with all hope that you were on the right side of history.

I found this incredibly affecting.

I loved this book. The desire to know and understand your relatives is universal. One line especially hit deep: “…even inherited memory hurts.”
Add on the desire to know if your German ancestors had participated in the atrocities of Hitler’s Germany, or if they had been trapped and forced to go along or be done away with. It reads like a mystery, but without the fictional excitement. You are on the ride with the author to discover the truth behind her own family’s behavior. Do yourself a favor and read it.
