I enjoyed the smaller stories inside the larger story. However, I was a little disappointed with how the book ultimately ended.
Geeze, I go on vacation for a week and everything on Goodreads looks different.
Anyways, while this book was intricately written, I've read similar things to it. It also didn't grasp my attention much at all.

This is a suck you in and spit you out kind of a tale. It was surprising. Basically, I was drawn in to this unusual, compelling, grotesque, sad, thoughtful and unexpected book. The initial descriptions of the burn victim's state were kind of hard to take(I was squirming), but you would be remiss to stop there.
There's a little history, mystery, love, obsession, depression, catastrophe, and hope. How can you say no to that?

A fascinating read. Enjoyed the 'now' story arc better than the 'history' arc. Did start leaping over them but went back and read most before the end.
This took a long time to read; there is so much to absorb. A very talented writer.
I'm not sure how to review this book. I don't know how much of the plot to give away. The book opens with the narrator describing his car accident and how he is in the burn unit. The doctors keep him in a coma for weeks and eventually he begins his long recovery. During this time it is evident that he cannot go back to his old life. Eventually, a woman comes to his room and begins telling him stories. He is sure the woman is not normal, but he likes her visits and makes sure she can get by the nurses. The stories Marianne tells are often about love and involve various sacrifices. I think I kept reading the story just to read these stories. The modern day part of the book at times was hard to read because you go through the recovery from burns and trying to make a new life. Overall I found myself hoping for a happy ending that would probably never come, but I really liked the book. The book is not really light and fluffy or easy reading. The parts about the narrators life before the accident sometimes made me cringe, but it didn't stop me from reading. I think that for a first book this was really amazing.
