This is good because everything Raina Telgemeier makes is good, but it wasn't as strong as Smile or Drama to me. Still totally worth reading and better than most other things out there, but I didn't connect quite as well to this story since my relationship with my sister is TOTALLY different than the one portrayed in this book. And obviously that's not a reason to not like it, but it will prevent me from giving it more stars since these reviews are alllllllllll about meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

If you liked Smile, there's no reason you won't love Sisters. I liked that this one was a little more focused that Smile -- it really zooms in on a particular moment in Raina and Amara's lives (road trip!), and it zooms in on a particular theme too (sisterly love....and hate). As always, Raina's art is just ridiculously lovely, and the style really matches the tone and the story. I really loved how the flashbacks are washed in a glaze of sepia. Basically, no complaints whatsoever.

Having loved both [b:Smile|18811325|Smile|Raina Telgemeier|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1384702558s/18811325.jpg|6582125] and [b:Drama|13436373|Drama|Raina Telgemeier|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1330157763s/13436373.jpg|18940474], I was really looking forward to this book, but I don't feel like it lived up to my expectations. Maybe it was just me, but I didn't love it the same way I loved Telgemeier's other books. This memoir does perfectly encapsulate what it means to have a younger sister who is close to you in age, all the fighting, teasing, and small moments of love, and that I absolutely connected to. But I just didn't engage on the same level as I have with other books lately and I didn't particularly care what happened. But, as always, the art is wonderful, colorful, and expressive. It's still a lot of fun and I would absolutely give this book to middle school girls, and, in fact, I'm already pushing it on my 11-year-old stepsister.

I read it with my tutee so it counts OKAY!

This was a nice quick read of a sweet familial memoir. The author does a good job of capturing frustrations between family members and the details of those memories.

Book #99 Read in 2014
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier (YA)

This graphic novel is a sequel to Smile, also a graphic novel. I really liked Smile but Sisters left me a bit disappointed. In Sisters, Raina and her sister and brother and mother are driving cross-country to visit family. Raina and her sister never get along so neither are really looking forward to being trapped in a moving vehicle together for a week. There is sparring back and forth. This book had potential to be a bit more meaty (mother and father having marital problems) but that potential was never really addressed and the ending felt abrupt...it left me wanting more. That being said, I think a middle school reader would be ok with it. Cute read.
