I really really want to give this 5 stars because I really enjoyed it but deep down inside I do not have the enthusiasm to give it a full blown 5! This is supposedly a Ukrainian folklore story and it was so heart warming and cute. I actually laughed at one point which I realize helps anyone to get in touch with their child innocence.
This story is about a boy name Nicki who wants a pair of white color mittens. His grandmother refuses to make it because she believes he will lose it since the color will match the snow. Sure enough when she does make it for him, he obliviously loses in the snow. As he goes about his outdoor adventure in the snow, all these wildlife animals such as rabbit, hedgehog, bear, and others want to get inside the mitten where there is barely any room!
It was cute and definitely worth reading for the kids. The only problem I had was the ending was so abrupt which is a little irritating for me because the author executed the beginning and the middle but failed to execute the ending!

A very sweet winter read with adorable animals.
Picture book about a boy with white mittens who loses one and gets reunited with his mitten
What I love most about Jan Brett's books are the illustrations. And the talking animals, of course.
What a fun story! The illustrations are beautiful. An excellent storytime choice!
I remember reading this book as a kid and thinking it was hilarious. It came back in at the library today and I totally took a moment to reread it. It was still hilarious. I also loved the style of artwork used.
This is a picture book I LOVED when I was a kid! Brett came to a Barnes and Noble that I worked at and I had the opportunity to work the event itself. I only wish that I was able to find my original copy for her to sign!
I love that she does her own illustrations for her books - something I didn't realize until the event. And she uses watercolor which is my favorite! As I re-read this and "The Snowy Nap" I did find the writing to be a little meh, but it's a picture book and so it's not a HUGE deal to have the best writing. I do think I remember her saying that she prefers the illustrations to the storytelling, but I'm not 100% sure!

December 2016 - I've told this story many, many times for storytime, but usually just use my library's prop mitten and animals and tell it from memory, since the text is too wordy for toddler storytime. I love the story, but I don't quite get the love of Jan Brett's illustrations - they're expressive and detailed, but there's something off about her human faces and perspectives. I dunno. I prefer the Aylesworth/McClintock version. But the story is classic and Ben enjoyed it.
December 2019 - reread for winter.

The Mitten is a tale about a young boy who drops one of his new mittens while outside one day and all of the animals that decide to use it to keep warm. This version is a retelling of a classic Ukrainian folktale paired with gorgeous pictures in muted tones that create a relaxed, cozy feeling for the readers. The tale itself is a little silly and deals with the personification of various forest animals. It deals with mathematical concepts of big/little, increasing size, and spatial awareness. This book would fit easily into winter, bear, and arctic animal thematic units.
A really cute book about one mitten from a pair.
