I loved this!! Strong female (and male) characters that are worth looking up to. I love the fantasy and fairy-tale elements- even more so that the prince realizes it’s not his right to force a marriage on someone who doesn’t want it. I absolutely loved the message that we can make different choices for a different future- that we don’t have to keep “building castles.” This is a great read

The writing and the artwork have earned this 2 stars but I'll give it 3 for the messages it's trying to share with kids.

'Another Castle: Grimoire' by Andrew Wheeler with art by Paulina Ganucheau collects all 5 issues from the series and tells a great story about a self-rescuing princess.

Princess Misty of Beldora has her life all planned out for her by those around her. When she gets captured by Lord Badlug, he threatens her kingdom unless she marries him. Her own kingdom sends the prince that Misty is supposed to marry after her to rescue her. This is where the story becomes less typical. Misty wants to forge her own path. She wants to get the magical sword and take matters into her own hands. Along the way, she meets a cast of characters who have been stereotyped into their own stories. With Misty's help, they discover new paths of their own.

I liked it. The art and character design feels pretty fresh. The story has an unconventional approach. The characters are all pretty interesting.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and Diamond Book Distributors in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Amazing! I'm loving that more and more authors are turning the medieval princess fantasy story on its head.

Look - I’m having fun here. Realistic? Absolutely not. Goofy as hell? For sure. Amazing art? Certainly. Misty is a grumpy thing who can’t decide what she wants, but sure knows what she doesn’t. Gorga is my darling and I love her and she deserves the world. Also love the guys making up and falling back in love quietly and naturally in the background.

I enjoyed this. The art style is not what I typically enjoy, but I saw it and thought it looked like something a few of my goodreads friends would have chosen and thought I would give it a chance. And though I'm still not a fan of all the bright pinks and purples, I know I can't judge a comic based strictly on its use of them.

As to the story, it is a little heavy handed when it comes to pushing the feminist message, especially since Misty wasn't really an interesting character. For that reason, had I read this on the original separate issues, I wouldn't have continued past issue #1 because it was pretty much just about her.

But once I continued, I found a lot of humor in the story telling. I mean, having a contractor submit a proposal for the type of monsters the hero would face? As someone who does contract work, that had me laughing for a few minutes. But there was also discussion of what happens after the hero wins and how the people cope with losing the lives they had built once their tyrant ruler is overthrown. Also, the Gorga stepped in as an interesting female heroine who actually does save the day despite how she is kind of overlooked in the story. For those reasons, I do recommend this as a collection.

The art in this book is really awesome, the plot is likable, but the thing I like most about this book is the princess and her responsibility not only to her people but also to the creatures of the kingdom who's king kidnapped her. They did a good job making her not the typical princess who will continue to rule afterward but bringing justice and democracy to the kingdoms. Excellent job just showing compassion to the "enemy" and just making them normal folks. If there happens to be another I will be sure to pick it up! ~Ashley

If you want another not your stereotypical princess books I highly suggest Dealing with Dragons
