This book is AWESOME. I won't give much away, except that the story is great, the mystery is compelling and surprising, and the characters are amazing. Em is a fantastic female lead, tough, realistic, dark, and easily likeable. Oh man, it is going to be so hard to review this without giving away the great details, but if you NEED to read this! It's the Maze Runner concept mixed with Lord of the Flies, and it ROCKS!!

As per the author's request (it's in the back of the book) I will not reveal anything about the book or the story or anything. I will say I actually liked reading this book. It surprised me and scared me and had me hoping for the characters. I do have characters that I liked and one especially that I just wanted to smack the living shit out of (you know who you are)
I'm using this book as a part of my honors thesis for my senior year of college and I choose it long before the book came out not knowing much outside of the synopsis but I'm glad I did because it fits very well into the overall theme of my paper.
Thank you Scott Sigler for this book, and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

At risk of sounding like a sheep, my opinion about a book is generally in line with the majority. Not so on this one. Intended as a YA, it featured protagonists who think they are 12, and it shows in their thought processes and speaking. I have long since learned, too, that life is too short to finish books where you can't stand even the main character. Her constant over-narration (telling not showing) and emphatic driving home pieces of information that, yes we got already, thank you, is enough to make me stop not even 100 pages in. Not to mention her attitude towards an incident with Yong, which apparently the author does not want me to spoil, where she gets angry at everyone else for not helping, or for causing it (by allowing themselves to be knocked out and not protecting her, a perfect stranger) when it is quite clearly largely her own doing.

It's just...boring. And grating. Definitely not for me.

This was fast paced and had me constantly wondering what was going to happen next. I do think it was trying to do a bit too much rather than going deeper into one idea which left me wanting a bit more from the characters than I got.

A solid 2.5 stars. More unanswered questions that resolutions. I guess it was a good author's ploy to get readers to read the next book in this series. For my complete review read my blog at http://booklovinalicia.blogspot.com/

I received a digital copy as an ARC from Netgalley and from Random House Publishing Group - Del Rey Spectra to read and review.

***After some thinking I have to raise my rating to 4 stars. I have thought and thought about this book for a few hours now. Which means it impacted me more than I thought, and not in a bad way. Too many preconceived ideas of how it should have been. The author took his own approach and it worked. Though disappointed and full of questions at first, the ending left me wanting more and excited to read the next book hours after finishing. It just had to all sink in.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting this book to be quite this good. I was so into this sci-fi thriller, and it absolutely helped that it was a quick read. It would’ve been so easy to plow through this in one sitting if I read it on a weekend because it was one of those books where each reveal left you wanting more. It is also one of those books where you should know basically nothing going in, so I’m basically going to leave my review here. Except to say that my favorite characters were definitely Spingate and Gaston, and the main reveal towards the end of the book was incredible. 4.5 stars rounded up. Seriously, just read it and be entertained.

The premise is promising, but the book didn't deliver. There was no there there. Little to no character development, so why should I care what happens to them? Sure, it's the first in yet another trilogy, but I have no desire to read further. The book was all surface and no depth.

I enjoy how the story built. The different personalities give much insight to the characters as they develop. 92
