I enjoyed the leisurely pace of storytelling and really felt part of the time and place of this book. The story had more depth and richness than I initially expected.
This is a selection for one of my book clubs. I'm having a hard time getting through it after two days. I will give it one more try before putting it aside.
I attended the book club meeting and decided to finish the book. It was okay. I doubt I'll ever read it again, but I'm glad I finished it. I learned the secrets that some of the characters were trying to hide.
Will Tweedy was a bit of a busybody and some of his pranks were downright mean spirited. However, his flaws were no worse than those of the other characters. Descriptions of daily life in that era were interesting and now I want to make one of my Aunt Doris' pound cakes!

An entertaining book set in Cold Sassy, Georgia, this is a story that accurately depicts life in the south with lingering post Civil War hurts and lifestyles. The audio narration was fantastic. It is a coming of age story for Will but also a love story and family drama with a bit of comedy sprinkled throughout. There are those who will dislike this book because of the religion and racism that is portrayed. It's frustrating to read I agree, but I also think that's how we as a society can learn from our past mistakes. Don't just fill your mind with things that you agree with!
found a copy of this on the giveaway shelf at the library, and i just couldn't help but take it home and open it up again. damn but this book made me cry the first go around. $10 says it does the second pass, too.
(update: just finished re-reading. i owe myself $10.)

The writing in this book, that tried to force you to read the dialogue and thoughts with a specific southern accent was hard for me to get around. Most of the book felt like filler and then the ending didn't feel like it was fully finished; it felt rushed and incomplete. The book at times felt like a chore to read. At times the character development or lack there of felt weird. For example, it felt weird to have Grandpa be portrayed as this man who only wanted a house keeper, to then have him turn and confess at the end of the book, that he did have eyes for Miss Love . It almost felt like the author didn't know who they wanted the characters to be overall.
